ORCHARD PARK – In talking with Buffalo Payments offensive deal with Spencer Brown on Thursday, one takeaway is that he seemingly has a warped sense of enjoyment.
“It is difficult, however on the similar time it is fairly enjoyable,” Brown stated when requested about on the point of go in opposition to the Minnesota Vikings’ blitz-crazy protection. “I watched their sport two weeks in the past on the flight (dwelling from Las Vegas). Simply watching it, I used to be actually trying ahead to this week and seeing what they do on the sphere.”

Brown is the final word competitor, a soccer warrior in each sense, however he could wish to watch out what he needs for Monday evening when the Payments invade the noise palace that’s U.S. Financial institution Stadium to play the Vikings.
Buffalo’s offensive line goes to get the final word take a look at in opposition to diabolical Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores who will need to have been wronged by some quarterback in his previous and is now hellbent on making each one in all their lives depressing, to not point out the fellows like Brown who’re charged with maintaining quarterbacks in a single piece.
The Vikings have the No. 1 scoring protection within the NFL permitting simply 13.3 factors per sport. Their seven-game yield of 93 factors is their fewest at this level of a season since 1986, and their 10 factors allowed within the fourth quarter are the fewest within the NFL via seven video games for the reason that 2019 New England Patriots allowed simply seven.
Minnesota’s success is rooted in Flores’ reliance on pressuring the quarterback into oblivion with 5, six and even seven rushers at a time, and he does this at a stunningly excessive blitz charge of 71% of the performs. The following closest staff when it comes to blitz frequency is the Panthers at 42.6%, whereas Buffalo ranks tenth at 34.4%, a determine that rose dramatically due to final week’s sport in opposition to third-string Baltimore QB Joe Fagnano. Earlier than that, the Payments have been down round 29%.

Why the Vikings blitz greater than any NFL protection
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) is sacked by Minnesota Vikings outdoors linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel (43) and outdoors linebacker Dallas Turner (15) through the first half of the N.F.L. sport at Ford Area in Detroit, Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026.
“It is not even how a lot they blitz; it is how productive they’re after they do blitz,” stated Josh Allen. “They convey it from each side, they’re going to blitz the center, they’re going to drop guys that you simply suppose are coming. It is a very in-tune protection. These guys are very good, they’re taking part in so nicely collectively. It is exhausting to sport plan for a staff like this as a result of there’s not any weaknesses.”
Within the final two weeks, they blitzed the Colts’ Daniel Jones on 85.2% of his dropbacks, and final week they got here after the Lions’ Jared Goff 79.3% of the time, per Sumer Sports activities charting. Not surprisingly, that has helped Minnesota rank No. 1 in each sack share (10.5%) and strain charge (45.8%).

“No matter you observe, it isn’t going to appear like it, it isn’t going to be on the tempo and the pace and the physicality that it’s in sport, proper?” coach Joe Brady stated. “They’re clearly an elite protection, they usually make you’re employed the whole sport and that is why they’re No. 1 within the league proper now.
“You have to belief your guidelines, belief your method, the communication needs to be elite. You are on the highway, it is at all times going to be exhausting. They clearly do an excellent job to make it disturbing on you on each single play.”
How Josh Allen can counter the Vikings’ aggressive blitz
Buffalo Payments quarterback Josh Allen scrambles out of the pocket whereas trying downfield through the first quarter in opposition to the Baltimore Ravens at Highmark Stadium.
How the road holds up, and the way Allen offers with the strain, may decide the end result. So far, Allen has been blitzed on 33.2% of his dropbacks and he has made groups pay. He has accomplished 66.7% of his passes at 8.6 yards per try with three TDs, although he does have two picks and has suffered 4 sacks.

Past that, what could give Flores pause is Allen’s escapability which could be deadly in opposition to a blitzing protection. Counting all passing performs, he has scrambled 19 instances and his 204 scramble yards are fourth-most within the league they usually embody a league-best 11 runs of 10 yards or extra by a QB.
Then once more, possibly Flores will not care, simply as he did not in opposition to Jones who’s a cell QB. Three different cell QBs confronted his wrath and he blitzed Caleb Williams of the Bears 76.1% in Week 2, the Dolphins’ Malik Willis 60% in Week 4, and Tyler Shough of the Saints 61% of his dropbacks.
Payments offensive line braces for a distinct type of Vikings take a look at
Khalil Mack #52 of the Chicago Bears rushes in opposition to Spencer Brown #79 of the Buffalo Payments throughout a preseason sport at Soldier Area on August 21, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois. The Payments defeated the Bears 41-15.
Brown made the purpose that what makes Minnesota distinctive is it would not have a famous person go rusher like Houston’s duo of Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson, the Lions’ Aidan Hutchinson, the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby, or the Rams’ Aaron Donald, gamers you sport plan particularly for. The Vikings have a number of gamers like Dallas Turner, Andrew Van Ginkel, Jalen Redmond and Blake Cashman working collectively in a scheme that stresses the whole line, plus chipping tight ends or backs.

“I do not suppose they’ve guys who’re going to be all-world beaters … they do not have these guys, however while you play a staff the place all of them simply play tremendous nicely collectively, that is most likely a extra harmful staff than simply taking part in in opposition to All-Execs or future Corridor of Famers,” Brown stated. “You get guys who simply play for one another and play exhausting they usually’re in the best spots, it is a problem. I sit up for it.”
Like Brown, Allen is hooked on competitors and challenges, and he agreed together with his proper deal with that the Vikings are, as he stated, “Enjoyable to observe from a soccer perspective. Nevertheless it’s exhausting to observe from the opposing quarterback perspective, the place it is like we’re making an attempt to determine this out.
“It’s important to be on prime of it. I’ve acquired to be ensure that our safety guidelines are the place they must be. Have a plan going into it and if that plan’s not true, we have to alter in sport. It positively presents a whole lot of challenges for an offensive scheme the way in which that they are doing it.”
