Jump around the planet. With this challenge the athlete Hamish Kerr starts the season, Olympic jumping champion in Paris 2024, who plans to donate one New Zealand dollar (equivalent to approximately 0.5 euros) to some of the most influential climate organizations in the world.
Throughout the season, Kerr estimates that it can reach 5,000 centimeters, which would mean a similar financial amount for the donation.
Hamish’s commitment, which any fan can join, is part of the new climate movement driven by athletes and which is called ‘Sport One, Carbon Zero’, created by Marcus Daniell, member of the IOC Athletes Commission, and Hugo Inglis, winner of the IOC Climate Action Award, through their non-profit organization ‘High Impact Athletes’.
Other athletes who join the Olympic champion with other challenges and the commitment to donate are the tennis player Lulu Sun and the discus thrower Sam Mattis. “I’ve always been environmentally conscious, and it’s something we talked about a lot when I was young,” Kerr told Olympics.com.
Acknowledging our imperfections, but also the fact that we can be part of the solution, is incredibly powerful. And if we don’t start somewhere, nothing will change, and that is the worst possible scenario.

In this sense, the New Zealander assured that “as athletes, we deal with failure and imperfection every day. There are injuries, mental health problems and everything else we go through on our path (…). So acknowledging our imperfections, but also the fact that we can be part of the solution, is incredibly powerful. And if we don’t start somewhere, nothing will change, and that’s the worst possible scenario.”
