The New York City Councilor, Zahran Kwame Mamdanihas participated in a forum of global leaders to highlight the importance of ideological cooperation in the current geopolitical scenario. During his speech, which was previously recorded, the US representative wanted “start by thanking President Pedro Sánchez and progressive leaders around the world” their role in organizing this space for dialogue. The mayor has stressed that, in a context of instability, it is “it is essential that progressive leaders unite and practice solidarity” to face common challenges.
Mamdani has conveyed what for him is the social reality of his own city, pointing out that the inhabitants of New York face serious “struggles to afford living in the most expensive city in the United States of America”. In his analysis, the president explained that he receives constant testimonies about the “difficulty paying rent on the first of the month, buying food at the supermarket, finding child care they can actually afford”. For the councilor, these experiences are not isolated cases, but rather they faithfully represent the situation of the working classes internationally.
Under this premise, the mayor has defended that the current financial problem is not an exclusive phenomenon of his region, stating that this “Income inequality crisis is not something exclusive or unique to our city; it is something that has become a reality of life for too many people around the world”. Faced with this situation, he has called for joint action, defining the coalition of progressive parties as a “beautiful and growing movement to combat this type of inequality and offer dignity in all places” where precariousness is manifested.
Finally, the New York mayor has highlighted the need to establish a shared roadmap that allows us to overcome the current economic model. In his words, the path to eradicating income gaps is a path that nations “they must travel together” to obtain tangible results. His speech concluded with a message of optimism about international collaboration, stating that “I look forward to working with all of you to build a tomorrow better than the life we live today”.
