Mike McDaniel’s job with the Los Angeles Chargers is, no less than for now, nonetheless protected.
The Chargers fell in a fairly tough outing to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, which dropped them to 0-4 on the yr. The offense struggled considerably, and Justin Herbert threw a pair of interceptions within the 30-23 loss. Issues are, undoubtedly, not going nicely.
However firing his offensive coordinator simply 4 video games into his tenure isn’t one thing head coach Jim Harbaugh is even pondering of doing but.
“His job shouldn’t be in jeopardy,” Harbaugh mentioned after the loss, >. “He’s a talented coach, and we’re going to continue to grow.”
Issues have been unhealthy from the beginning. Herbert threw an interception on the very first play of the sport, and the ball went proper to Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas. Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold threw one on his first play from scrimmage, too. The sport was, remarkably, the primary because the d with consecutive thrown interceptions.

Herbert threw one other unhealthy choose within the second quarter, and solely had 5 completions for 36 yards within the first half. The Chargers rallied a bit within the second half and minimize the sport to a single rating — Herbert solely missed three passes within the second half and had 144 yards — however couldn’t full the comeback. Herbert now has six interceptions this season to only 4 touchdowns.
The Chargers’ points completely transcend McDaniel. However it’s straightforward to imagine that he’d be a simple goal ought to the struggles proceed. McDaniel is in his first job since his cut up with the Miami Dolphins final season. He was the Dolphins’ head coach for 4 seasons, however completed with only a 35-33 file in his first stint as a head coach within the league.
The Chargers’ schedule doesn’t get any simpler. They’ll host the Denver Broncos subsequent week earlier than video games in opposition to the Kansas Metropolis Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams. The Chiefs are nonetheless undefeated, and each the Rams and Broncos are 2-2 on the yr. A loss to the Broncos on Sunday would make it eight straight relationship again to final yr.
However regardless of all the pieces, Harbaugh is retaining his head excessive and staying optimistic. And he’s doing it with McDaniel operating his offense.
"The plan didn’t work to end in a victory, and we'll return and plan some extra with the expert coaches now we have and the proficient gamers and battle," Harbaugh mentioned. "That's what provides me optimism."
