The SAP Center in San Jose, California, witnessed the twentieth anniversary of the CrossFit Games 2026 where for the first time individual athletes had to face a total of 20 scoring events over four days as a commemoration of the event. This figure doubled the number of tests from the previous edition, making it the longest and most demanding physical endurance test of the CrossFit Games.
And after four days of a demand never seen before, the final result did not take us to 2006, but to 2024 since James Sprague He again won the Fittest on Earth, becoming the first athlete to achieve it twice non-consecutively.
Sprague’s role during the competition was practically honorary. Winner of three of the 20 events (5, 18 and 19) he showed that his title was not based on accumulating victories but on impressive regularity (in 11 of the 20 events he was in the top 5) almost always staying in the top positions, avoiding bad results (his worst result was 15th place in event 3). That consistency allowed him to reach the last event with a sufficient advantage over Dallin Pepper and secure his second title Fittest Man on Earthdespite finishing tenth in the final test.

The fight for the podium was much tighter. Several athletes swapped positions throughout the competition thanks to partial victories and great performances in specific events, making it clear that the level among the world’s elite continues to narrow. The events combined aerobic demands, heavy lifting, high-level gymnastics and resistance tests, testing the adaptation capacity of all competitors.

The athlete who was obese and who suffered the separation of his parents
James Sprague’s story is not a story of overcoming, but it was not a simple childhood either. As a child he was overweight and went through a difficult time emotionally after his parents separated. However, it was his father, Patrick Sprague, who changed his life. He was a three-time CrossFit Games competitor in the master category, which he reached after overcoming an alcoholism problem. Seeing his father’s transformation was what pushed him to compete in CrossFit with some regularity. Before CrossFit he competed in swimming, something that helped him years later to perform very well in aquatic and aerobic events.

Although beyond a good sports base and a good reference, Sprague’s other great inspiration was the Christian faith. It is common to see him recite verses from the Bible and after winning the 2024 edition he said that the merit was not his alone and that he tried to use his career to glorify God.
In short, beyond his physical condition, James Sprague stands out for a story of personal transformation: he went from being an overweight teenager with self-esteem problems to becoming a world champion, relying on his family, his faith and extraordinary discipline.
The most complete athlete on the circuit
Sprague does not stand out for a single quality, but for being very complete. His strengths include excellent aerobic capacity, very efficient in gymnastics, great endurance in long events, very solid mentally, he rarely breaks down after a bad test and good technique in weightlifting, without being the strongest lifter on the circuit.
His greatest virtue is consistency as he has demonstrated in this 2026 edition and his way of competing stands out for staying calm, making good decisions during the WOD, knowing when to attack and when to conserve energy, and he usually makes very few strategic errors. And all this without being the most spectacular.

He is undoubtedly the leader of the generational change after figures like Justin Medeiros, Pat Vellner or Brent Fikowski, combining youth, an enormous capacity for work and a competitive maturity unusual for his age.
Notable role of Spanish athletes
For the first time in the history of the CrossFit Games, there were three Spanish athletes who participated with the world elite: Luis Cuellar (29th), Calum Clements (24th) and Aniol Ekai (22nd). Aniol arrived as the Spaniard with the most expectations after winning the European classification of the MAD Fitness Festival and he demonstrated this by being the best classified of the three and even managed to win one of his heats. Calum achieved a spectacular fourth place in the first event, being one of the best Spanish results in an individual event, while Cuellar was the most consistent throughout the week.
