Sergio Alvarez Moya (Avilés, 1985) lands in the Longines Global Champions Tour of Madrid eager to leave behind Shanghai and start adding with Madrid in Motion. The Asturian rider disputes his first season with the equipment Spanish and arrives at Country club with the need to regain momentum before his audience.
Ask. Sergio, now that you have joined Madrid in Motion, what feelings do your first tests leave you in this new stage?
Answer. The truth is that Shanghai, which was the first contest with Madrid in Motion, did not go well. In the United States I gave the horse a little rest and then, between trips and quarantines, I did not train with the intensity that the event requires. But Madrid is a contest that I know well, I know perfectly well what I am going to face, so what is past is past. Now it’s time to look forward.

Q. Is it special for a Spanish rider to compete here, in Madrid, in an event of this level?
R. Yes, it is a world-class competition and, furthermore, at home. It is special to compete in our country, in front of our public.
Q. What would be a good outcome for you, both individually and as a team?
R. The first thing is the team. I think he was on the podium last year and the year before that too. They have always been in the top positions. This year I hope we are at the same level and can help the team.

Q. Do you think that Madrid can be a turning point to rejoin the top zone of the classification?
R. The League is very long. In the end, the team won at the beginning, but then in Mexico and Shanghai we didn’t have a good result either. In my case, it didn’t go well for my results either. You have to continue. There will always be contests in which you do very well and others in which you don’t so well, so you have to think about what’s coming.

Q. What is the relationship like with the other members of the team, both foreigners and Spaniards? Is communication difficult?
R. No, it’s not difficult. In the end we have known each other for a long time and there is a good relationship within the team.
Q. What do you think you can contribute to Madrid in Motion?
R. Well, at the moment I haven’t contributed anything. Now we have to start with results. In the end, that’s what counts: that things go well on the court. I think that between now and the end of the year there are still many venues left.
Q. Do you think that the affection of the people can be an impetus to achieve a good result in Madrid?
R. In Madrid there is always a very good atmosphere. Plus, it also helps to know the track after several years competing here.
Q. The event coincides this year with San Isidro. What would you say to those people who may not be so close to equestrian sports and who may come to the Country Club a little lost?
R. I encourage anyone who likes animals and wants to spend a weekend outdoors to come. When you don’t know things, it’s hard to get hooked, but there is a very good atmosphere. You can spend a great weekend, both with friends and family, and I think it is worth it.
