The Copa del Rey final left behind a notable media hangover that translated into a barrage of news throughout the football world. One of them had as its protagonist Juan Carlos Rivero, who was singled out for a comment made following the blowing of the Spanish anthem.
“And the anthem of Spain plays in La Cartuja. Some hummed the ‘lololo’, others received it in another way. Well, freedom of expression. Everyone who understands what they have to do in cases like these“But generally it is good to respect the emblems,” Rivero said live. His words, however, did not go unnoticed and ended up being a topic of conversation among fans.
The attack on Thebes and Rivero’s response
One of the reactions that was not long in coming was that of Javier Tebaswho responded to the narrator: “From my personal position, it is necessary to condemn when any anthem is blown, like that of Egypt, that of Spain more so. Now that I am vice president of the Federation, I am going to try to put some measure in place so that this does not happen again. HOh, you have to have respect, it is not freedom of expression, as our colleague Juan Carlos Rivero said. For years we have been denouncing cries like ‘Bitch Spain’. There are no longer chanted cries like ‘Puta España’ and ‘Puta Catalunya’. I think that a solution must be found because this remains a 48-hour discussion until next year, because if a team from my beloved Basque Country or Catalonia arrives there will always be whistles.
Due to this comment, Rivero has come forward to qualify his words and leave a clear message on social networks: “It is not about an image wash, but about showing reality. Unfortunately, today many prefer to see the glass half empty, ignoring other perspectives. Therefore, it is necessary to explain it for those who want to understand it. All the best!”.
