Pablo Motos received this Tuesday in ‘The Anthill’ to the actress Rossy de Palmawith whom he has spoken about his upcoming projects, which includes the premiere of the film ‘Hunting Day’a ‘remake’ of ‘The Hunt’, the famous film by Carlos Saura.
PAUL MOTOS. You have a new movie, it is a remake of the Hunting movie that premieres on July 3.
ROSSY DE PALMA. It’s a very interesting idea. As a result of this film, I have proposed that many remakes be made of well-known films made by men and interpreted by women. In this case, it is a dark film, from a dark time, that we do not want to see come back. These women are seen to be so rude, but there are also corruptions, plots… It’s very interesting. And then, with those actresses like Blanca Portillo and Carmen Machi, and Zoe Arnau, who plays my niece, a young girl who is also phenomenal.
PAUL MOTOS. You filmed in Extremadura, in the middle of August. They told me that you were hotter than paving a highway.
ROSSY DE PALMA. Very hot. But sometimes the cold or the heat adds richness, you feel it. We wanted to get up early to avoid it, but it didn’t dawn before… and when it dawned, the heat was already coming.
PAUL MOTOS. And you were wearing a prosthesis.
ROSSY DE PALMA. Yes, but only at the end. Carmen kept a phrase of mine because sometimes it made me angry: “In the cinema you have to have the patience of Saint Job.” Technique always prevails. I claim that all unions are important. If one comes out with bad makeup, it doesn’t seem to matter, but everything is important.
PAUL MOTOS. There is a sequence shot where you and Blanca improvise.
ROSSY DE PALMA. Yes. I am very good at sequence shots. I would make a whole movie like that. The shot against shot bores me. I abandon myself a lot to the characters.
PAUL MOTOS. You say that you are not an actress, but rather a performer-artist.
ROSSY DE PALMA. Yes. I play a lot of styles, I don’t master anything. I’m always very busy. I like the artistic and the artisan. I respect the actor’s work, but I don’t study or memorize. I do the void, I am very Taoist. And the character comes and possesses me. Then I make gestures that I don’t do in life.
PAUL MOTOS. Do you like improvising?
ROSSY DE PALMA. A lot. Not knowing what is going to happen. As in life.
PAUL MOTOS. Are there many people like you in the guild?
ROSSY DE PALMA. There are some, yes. But I like to work on the edge of not knowing.
PAUL MOTOS. And how do you get along with the intense ones?
ROSSY DE PALMA. I don’t like artists who think they are something. Artists are not the art, we are the vehicle. It’s as if the plug thinks it’s electricity. There are influences that reach many. The important thing is to be honest. Cinema is a lie to tell a truth. Television, many times, is a lie to tell a lie. When I went to Tocata with Worse Impossible I left crying. Everything was so fake…
PAUL MOTOS. Did you play percussion with your group?
ROSSY DE PALMA. Yes, a drum machine. We did choirs, we danced… It was a medley. We experienced amazing things: in Melilla they threw cans at us, in Camoes liters full of sand. We were very modern.
PAUL MOTOS. And how did you live without a penny?
ROSSY DE PALMA. With maturity. Madrid was very dangerous. I wasn’t here to waste time. I had my family in Mallorca. My mother sent me money orders of one peseta. I lived through adolescence from 30 to 33 years old.
PAUL MOTOS. Now you say you are in the adolescence of old age.
ROSSY DE PALMA. Yes, 60 years old is the puberty of old age. I want to dedicate this decade to myself.
PAUL MOTOS. Another phrase of yours is that you only believe in gastronomic frontiers
ROSSY DE PALMA. Yes. Gastronomy unites. Geographic ones always hide conflicts. I am a humanist, we all belong to the planet.
PAUL MOTOS. And you say that one chooses to be ridiculous.
ROSSY DE PALMA. The sense of ridicule only exists for others. If they choose it, it’s not yours.
PAUL MOTOS. You also say that seeing beyond your nose has allowed you to see what people are like.
ROSSY DE PALMA. Yes. I was never a victim. I wondered why I was being blamed for something I didn’t choose. That helped me understand human beings.
