Returning to the top category of Spanish football 14 years later deserves a First Division celebration. And Racing did so since Carlos Muñiz whistled the end of the match against Valladolid on Saturday. This Sunday came the slower celebrations with the usual parade through the city with an open-top bus and the final party in a crowded Sardinero.
The delegation toured the main arteries of Santander, passing through the Valdecilla Tunnel, Cuatro Caminos, La Marga, Marqués de la Hermida, Pasaje de Peña, Calvo Sotelo, Paseo de Pereda, Reina Victoria and Plaza de Italia. But, without a doubt, the most emotional and special moment of the afternoon was experienced at the doors of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital. The club bus made a mandatory stop, an applauded gesture from the entity and the players towards the admitted patients who were following the celebration from the windows.
The streets of the Cantabrian capital were full and the euphoric footballers were enjoying their time as they interacted with the fans, surrendered to a squad that has returned the city and the region to the First Division. The most active in the triumphal walk were Arana, with his hair dyed green; Manu Hernando, with a false beard in tribute to Villalibre; and Mantilla, as leader of the expedition.
