ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Because the Milwaukee Brewers have a good time the primary World Collection title in franchise historical past, the Tampa Bay Rays’ quest for baseball’s pinnacle presses on.
This 12 months’s Fall Traditional was the primary since 1980 that assured a first-time champion, providing a particular alternative for these explicit Brewers and Rays to cement themselves because the group that lastly pushed their group over the end line. Ultimately, it was the Brewers who emphatically seized the second, finishing one of the vital dominant postseason runs in MLB historical past and leaving their opponents solely to tip their caps.

“It is the most effective groups I’ve seen at any stage, in any sport,” Tampa Bay nearer Bryan Baker stated within the somber dwelling clubhouse after his group’s 4-1 loss on Wednesday in Sport 5.
“There are not any holes in that group. They did every part they wanted to do to win a World Collection. So congrats to them — it was a formidable show of baseball.”
That the Rays’ season resulted in a loss — and that their lone win on this 12 months’s Fall Traditional required a last-gasp walk-off within the backside of the twelfth inning in Sport 4 — shouldn’t overshadow what bought them right here within the first place. Tampa Bay was one of the best group within the American League for the overwhelming majority of the season and fortified that standing by sweeping the rival Yankees within the ALDS and taking down the AL Central champion Cleveland Guardians within the ALCS.

However on this explicit 12 months, the Rays’ distinction because the undisputed class of their league — with their 98 regular-season wins floating above their friends because the outlier in an in any other case lackluster American League — won’t have ready them for the battle-tested juggernaut that awaited on the opposite facet of the bracket. Granted, it is unclear if something may have sufficiently geared up the Rays — or any group — to tackle the buzzsaw that turned out to be the 2026 Brewers.
“That is one of the best group I’ve ever performed towards,” ace Drew Rasmussen stated afterward.
After exhausting their bullpen to eke out a Sport 4 victory in 12 innings to stave off elimination, the Rays’ roadmap to a different 27 outs in Sport 5 was cloudy for supervisor Kevin Money. There was some optimism for the early frames after Rasmussen volunteered to begin on brief relaxation for the primary time in his profession, however the plan past that was hazy — to say nothing of the ominous outlook on offense, with presumptive NL Cy Younger Jacob Misiorowski beginning for Milwaukee on common relaxation.
Rasmussen finally carried out admirably on Wednesday, recording extra outs (12) than he did in his disappointing displaying in Sport 2 (11) whereas surrendering just one run. However with three elbow surgical procedures on his ledger, the Rays didn’t need to push him recklessly, particularly given what he may imply for the group shifting ahead. The Rays maintain a $20 million group choice for Rasmussen in 2027, which, if exercised, would concurrently make him a cut price primarily based on his efficiency and the highest-paid Ray in franchise historical past. So even in an elimination recreation, the Rays would take what they might get from their finest pitcher and go from there.

“That man is a stud,” Money stated afterward. “His stuff was as sharp because it may have been.”
“We had gone into the sport saying it was 60 pitches or 4 innings. Caught to that. That was the best name on the planet to take him out of the ballgame. We have labored very arduous with all of our pitchers and delight ourselves on doing proper by them. We knew this was an enormous ask. [We] admire Drew Rasmussen a lot for taking the ball.”
Rasmussen departed the sport after 4 innings down solely 1-0, nevertheless it did not take lengthy earlier than Milwaukee broke by means of towards Tampa Bay’s beleaguered bullpen. Money went to right-hander Kevin Kelly for the fifth towards the underside of the Brewers’ order, however throughout this October, the spot within the lineup barely correlated to how harmful Milwaukee’s bats could possibly be. As such, it was little shock when 7-8-9 hitters Cooper Pratt, Garrett Mitchell and David Hamilton rattled off three straight singles towards Kelly to make it 2-0 Brewers.

Lefty Garrett Cleavinger then entered and struck out Jake Bauers to complete the inning, however he had much less success when he returned to the mound within the sixth. He plunked leadoff man Christian Yelich after which surrendered an RBI double to World Collection MVP William Contreras earlier than making approach for right-hander Tyler Wells — pitching in his fourth straight recreation and for the third day in a row — who yielded a sacrifice fly to Pratt to make it 4-0.
In the meantime, Misiorowski was dealing with little resistance from the Rays’ lineup. Tampa Bay mustered solely a pair of hits — a Junior Caminero single within the first and a Chandler Simpson single within the fourth — earlier than Misiorowski departed after 5 ⅔ scoreless innings as a consequence of a cramp in his proper calf. Relievers JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill then mixed to retire eight of the following 9 batters, with solely Simpson reaching on a Contreras throwing error within the seventh.
“We ran right into a group that had elite beginning pitching after which as elite of a bullpen as I’ve ever seen,” Money stated.
Within the ninth, the Rays bought a pair of doubles from Hicks and Simpson to spoil the shutout, however Megill locked it all the way down to finalize the historic triumph for Milwaukee.

The pair of extra-base hits within the season’s closing body increase the totals a tad, however by the tip of the sequence, Tampa Bay’s bats had been quieted to a level few groups had endured in World Collection historical past. The Rays scored simply 12 runs throughout the 5 video games, with their bats combining to slash .182/.224/.242 with one homer, Hicks’ first-inning blast in Sport 2. Tampa’s .466 OPS was the third-lowest in World Collection historical past for a group that performed at the least 5 video games, forward of solely the 1969 Baltimore Orioles (.430) and the 1905 Philadelphia Athletics (.386).
“They have the most effective pitching staffs in baseball, and so they’ve bought an elite protection, too,” Hicks stated. “You mix that, and it makes it actually powerful.
“I do not suppose we hit how we predict we have been able to, however you bought to provide them credit score, too. They have been on an unbelievable run.”
Because the Brewers spilled over the dugout railing and onto the sector to have a good time, the Rays lingered to look at and surprise what may have been. The scenes evoked not simply respect but additionally relatability. Each groups have routinely outperformed preseason expectations and thrived in smaller markets, with payrolls dwarfed by big-market behemoths. On Opening Day, FanGraphs forecasted each golf equipment to win 81 video games, giving the Brewers a 4.2% likelihood and the Rays a 3.2% likelihood of successful their respective leagues.

But right here they have been, the final two groups standing on the finish of October.
“Simply proud to be part of this group,” Baker stated. “Coming into the season, we have been picked fourth or fifth within the division. I believe we outshot that a bit bit — proved some individuals incorrect.”
On the similar time, the diploma to which the Brewers outclassed the Rays on this Fall Traditional highlighted the gaps between the 2 as Tampa Bay continues its pursuit of its first championship.
“The angle needs to be, 1793260445 we all know what it takes to win, proper?” veteran right-hander Nick Martinez stated afterward. “We did not actually play to that commonplace. Watching a group like that, taking part in towards such a high-caliber group like that ought to elevate guys’ play.”

From a roster-construction standpoint, Milwaukee has brilliantly blended the event of ultra-talented homegrown gamers with an array of impression additions through commerce, with free company hardly related to its team-building equation. The Rays too have excelled in trades for years, each figuring out lower-level future stars akin to Caminero or undervalued younger huge leaguers akin to Yandy Diaz or Rasmussen and putting huge on the deadline, as they did this summer time with Hicks and right-hander Freddy Peralta.
This season, Tampa Bay made hay by leaning into defensive specialists akin to Taylor Partitions, Ben Williamson and Jonny DeLuca, with a choose few sluggers in Caminero, Diaz and Jonathan Aranda carrying the offensive load. That technique was sufficient to dominate within the common season, even with a top-heavy pitching workers that didn’t characteristic the depth of current elite Rays groups. However because the stakes and the standard of opponent elevated in October, it turned tougher for Tampa Bay’s comparatively skinny lineup to maintain tempo with a complete membership just like the Brewers.
However, the Rays have the form of well-respected and inventive entrance workplace infrastructure that means the continued wait to win all of it won’t final for much longer. There’s additionally optimism rooted in a brand new possession group that has made strides towards securing a brand new ballpark throughout the bay in Tampa that could possibly be prepared for Opening Day 2029.

However with Milwaukee off the board, the Rays are one among simply 4 franchises nonetheless in search of their first World Collection title — and none has been to the Fall Traditional extra regularly than Tampa Bay. To reach within the closing stage and fall brief as soon as once more — irrespective of the standard of the opponent — will sting for some time.
“It sucks as a result of we believed with every part we had that we may win all of it,” Martinez stated. “However it was a hell of a trip with a really particular group of fellows.”
