With the appointment of Duncan Ferguson on the Oval anticipated to be confirmed on Monday, the membership's five-week seek for a brand new supervisor illustrates once more that there’s the straightforward manner, the exhausting manner, and the Glentoran manner.
When the east Belfast outfit parted firm with r, the easy answer to the early-season emptiness gave the impression to be a reunion with former assistant Tiernan Lynch.
A two-time winner of the Irish Premiership with Larne, Lynch was freshly again available on the market after leaving Derry Metropolis in August and instantly put in as favorite for the publish.
As an alternative, the Glens made the trickier prospect of prying Jim Magilton out of his contract at Cliftonville their precedence.
When the previous Northern Eire and Ipswich City midfielder made it clear he meant to remain at Solitude, no person would have predicted what got here subsequent.
A pivot in direction of Everton legend Ferguson, who additionally had spells with Rangers and Newcastle United, was not, as they are saying, on anybody's bingo card.

The attraction of bringing Ferguson's star energy to the Irish Premiership is apparent, akin to the increase offered to the League of Eire by former Chelsea winger Damian Duff's profitable, if quick, stint with Shelbourne lately.
A cult determine throughout two taking part in spells at Goodison Park because of each his goalscoring exploits and aggressive type – no participant has ever acquired greater than his eight Premier League pink playing cards – the 54-year-old Scot immediately turns into probably the most recognisable face within the league.
Followers rapidly had their very own enjoyable with the approaching appointment on Saturday, with faulty experiences of the seven-times capped Scottish striker being noticed in all places from his potential y to a neighborhood chip store on the Newtownards Highway.
Glentoran are not any strangers to massive names within the taking part in ranks having had the likes of Keith Gillespie, Nacho Novo and Niall McGinn plying their commerce on the Oval in latest occasions, however it’s completely different when such a presence is within the dugout.
Ferguson, in any case, could have been the one applicant with spells as an assistant to the likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez and Ronald Koeman on his CV.
In all, the Scot labored below seven completely different everlasting bosses at Everton, in addition to two separate stints in interim cost.
After leaving Merseyside following the departure of Frank Lampard in 2022, managerial roles at Forest Inexperienced Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle have been hardly thought of a hit, admittedly each in testing circumstances.
Coupled along with his unfamiliarity with the Irish League and, for all of the headlines already generated, there isn’t any doubt that the left-field appointment is a chance.
The Glentoran hierarchy clearly imagine it’s a threat value taking. Some Oval regulars might nicely recommend that the membership have tried nearly all the pieces else of their quest for a primary league title since 2009.
Proprietor Ali Shams Pour arrived a decade after the late Alan McDonald delivered the newest of the facet's 23 Gibson Cups. Since then, the turbulent reign of Mick McDermott introduced Irish Cup success in 2020 but he nonetheless was the sufferer of supporter protests.
The calming presence of Rodney McAree delivered instant outcomes, however the now Dungannon boss lasted just below 5 months earlier than departing for private causes to get replaced by Warren Feeney.
Unpopular from the off owing to his earlier affiliation with bitter rivals Linfield, the 46-times capped Northern Eire worldwide was unable to win over the fanbase throughout one other quick reign.
That caused Devine's appointment with the County Antrim Defend triumph of January 2025 a excessive the membership couldn’t construct upon. Consecutive losses in BetMcLean Cup finals created a way of stalled momentum.
It already feels more likely to be forgotten simply how shut Devine got here to delivering that long-sought title. A win within the penultimate league recreation of final season in opposition to Larne and the Glens would have gone into the ultimate day high of the desk.
As an alternative, the frustration of a 0-0 draw from a recreation by which they have been the higher facet lingered into the next efficiency in opposition to Coleraine and so they have been overwhelmed 6-2 on the Showgrounds to in the end end third.
It is not going to have escaped Ferguson's consideration that one half of the league's so-called 'Massive Two' have nonetheless not completed within the league's high two for 17 years.
In changing Devine, Ferguson will inherit a squad constructed by and for the previous Derry Metropolis and Bohemians boss.
And simply as Devine's appointment caused a sweeping clear-out in the summertime of 2024, it’s once more a taking part in group that for all of the expenditure over the previous 5 switch home windows once more feels imbalanced.
An over-reliance on Jordan Stewart for a artistic spark led to the September return of Conor McMenamin simply two months after he had signed for Coleraine – that switch now one way or the other the second most shocking story of Glentoran's season.
That in flip, nevertheless, noticed Joe Thomson transfer the opposite manner, robbing the facet of midfield drive solely months after one in all final season's star performers, Cammy Palmer, returned dwelling to Scotland.
Equally, the absence of 2025-26 high scorer Pat Hoban in the course of the early months of this season highlighted the shortage of like-for-like cowl given the gifted Jordan Jenkins performs in a completely completely different manner.
4 wins and a draw from their previous 5 league video games below interim boss Paddy McCourt, nevertheless, affords the reminder that the majority within the Irish Premiership would nonetheless fortunately swap their squads for the one Ferguson will now hope to rebuild into title challengers as soon as once more.
These managers is not going to, nevertheless, be coping with the identical expectations. Nor the identical consideration.
