YesErgio García has taken 6,069 strokes in 27 participations in the Augusta Masters. And of all of them, the best, in his opinion, was the second one he played on the 17th hole and which landed on the edge of the green from an impossible situation.
“I had hit a horrible drive, to give up golf. I had 181 yards to the flag and I hit a 4 iron, opening it 60 meters? but it was the only blow he had. There was a gap straight ahead, but with the height I had to hit it I couldn’t get it low enough because it had a hole. That was not an option. The other was to chip to the fairway and then play a third shot from 150 yards to that flag, which was very complicated. So I opted for that,” he revealed.
“So I said. If with the exit I have opened it 70 meters, let’s see if with the 4 iron I can open it another 70 meters. And it was a very good blow. Then I made a really good putt and it didn’t want to go in. “It was my best shot without a doubt.”
García, who understands that the demanding Augusta that the golfers faced on Thursday, “It’s how this field should be played,” he ended up happy with the result. “I could have easily taken two less shots, but on the 11th the ball got stuck in a divot in the fairway and on the 15th, I hit a great 3-iron, the wind changed and the ball bounced a little shorter before the green and also into the water. But it’s not something new. I’ve been coming here for 250 years and it’s happened to me a million times.”
The scoring and adrenaline of that blow does not boost Sergio’s mood. “Tomorrow will be another battle. I have done things more or less well. But when I hit a couple of bad drives, it starts to cost me. And as soon as that happens and you don’t have confidence you start to think: be careful not to put it there, don’t hit it there and everything is more complicated. I have fought it with everything I had. I have the game on pins and needles. It is a total survival exercise.”
