T20 WC Qualifiers: Bangladesh, Ireland, and Thailand Secure Opening Wins

The hunt for the final four spots in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 officially kicked off in Nepal this Sunday. With a chance to compete in England and Wales on the line, the opening day of the Global Qualifiers delivered clinical victories for Thailand, Bangladesh, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

Thailand Dampen Host Hopes with Clinical Chase

Nepal’s tournament opener didn’t go to plan as Thailand cruised to an eight-wicket victory. Despite a solid 52-run opening stand from the hosts, Nepal struggled to maintain momentum. Bindu Rawal provided the only major resistance with a gritty 44, but the Thai bowling attack, led by Thipatcha Putthawong (4/27), dismantled the lineup for 122.

In reply, Thailand’s top order made light work of the target. Natthakan Chantham headlined the chase with a blistering 57 off 39 balls, while Nannapat Koncharoenkai (32*) ensured the win was secured with over three overs to spare.

Sharmin Akhter Powers Bangladesh Past USA

Bangladesh survived an early scare against the United States to secure a 22-run win. The “Tigresses” were reeling at 66/3 after losing captain Nigar Sultana Joty, but Sharmin Akhter turned the tide. Her explosive 63 off 39 balls propelled Bangladesh to a formidable 159/5.

The USA started the chase with intent, led by Chetna Pagydyala (36), but they couldn’t keep up with the rising required rate. Nahida Akter proved to be the difference-maker with the ball, returning figures of 4/24 to stifle the American middle order.

Ireland’s Big Names Deliver Against PNG

Ireland relied on their experienced stars to claim a 41-run victory over Papua New Guinea. Orla Prendergast (56) and Gaby Lewis (42) anchored the innings, guiding the Irish to a competitive 146/6. While PNG’s Hane Tau impressed with a standout four-wicket haul, her efforts weren’t enough to inspire the batters.

Ireland’s bowling unit operated with surgical precision, with five different bowlers picking up wickets to ensure PNG never threatened the target.

Dutch Defend Low Total to Deny Zimbabwe

The most low-scoring thriller of the day saw the Netherlands edge out Zimbabwe by 22 runs. The Dutch innings was a rollercoaster; after losing early wickets, Phebe Molkenboer and Sterre Kalis rebuilt the innings, only for Zimbabwe’s Christabel Chatonzwa to spark a collapse. Chatonzwa’s sensational five-wicket haul (5/??) saw the Netherlands bundled out for 122.

However, Zimbabwe’s chase never gained traction. A devastating Powerplay saw them slump to 25/4. Despite a late cameo from Nyasha Gwanzura (27), the Zimbabwean lineup folded for 100, handing the Netherlands a vital opening win.
