Rams Edge Bears in OT Thriller: Stafford & Mevis Punch Ticket to NFC Title Game

Rams Edge Bears in OT Thriller: Stafford & Mevis Punch Ticket to NFC Title Game

The Los Angeles Rams are heading to the NFC Championship game after a snowy, nail-biting 20-17 overtime victory against the Chicago Bears. Despite a late-game miracle from rookie sensation Caleb Williams, Matthew Stafford and the “Thiccer Kicker” Harrison Mevis proved too much for Chicago to handle in the extra period.

The win sets up a high-stakes NFC West showdown next Sunday, as the Rams travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks for a spot in the Super Bowl.

OT Drama: Curl and Mevis Seal the Deal

The atmosphere at Soldier Field was electric after the Bears forced overtime, but the Rams’ defense quickly dampened the mood. After a quick three-and-out by the Rams’ offense, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams attempted a deep shot that was intercepted by Kam Curl.

With the ball back in his hands, Matthew Stafford showed why he is a Super Bowl champion. He orchestrated a precision drive, highlighted by a 16-yard strike to Puka Nacua, setting up Harrison Mevis. The rookie kicker calmly drilled a 42-yard field goal through the Chicago cold to end the Bears’ season.

“I looked right at Sean, he looked right at me,” Stafford said of his pre-drive exchange with coach Sean McVay. “And I’m like, ‘Here we go.’ That’s what it’s all about.”

Caleb Williams’ “Miracle” Wasn’t Enough

For a moment, it looked like the Bears would pull off another fourth-quarter comeback. Down 17-10 with just 18 seconds left in regulation, Caleb Williams escaped a collapsing pocket on 4th-and-4 to launch a desperation heave.

According to Next Gen Stats, the ball traveled 51.2 yards in the air before landing in the arms of tight end Cole Kmet for the game-tying touchdown. However, the momentum didn’t carry over into overtime, as Williams finished the night with three interceptions.

Key Stats: Rams vs. Bears (NFC Divisional Round)

Player Team Stats
Matthew Stafford Rams 20/42, 258 YDS
Caleb Williams Bears 23/42, 257 YDS, 2 TD, 3 INT
Kyren Williams Rams 87 Rush YDS, 2 TD
Puka Nacua Rams 56 REC YDS
D’Andre Swift Bears 76 Rush YDS

Looking Ahead: A Rivalry Renewed

The Rams (14-5) now turn their attention to the Seattle Seahawks, who dismantled the 49ers 41-6 on Saturday. The two NFC West rivals split their regular-season series, with each team winning on their home turf. With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, the third chapter of this season’s rivalry promises to be a classic.

Injury Note: * Rams: CB Emmanuel Forbes Jr. left with a shoulder injury.

  • Bears: TE Colston Loveland suffered a concussion late in the game.
