Kentucky Basketball took middle stage on Wednesday afternoon in Birmingham, Alabama, on the SEC Basketball Tipoff. We realized numerous various things from the occasion, from receiving the information straight from the supply that Zoom Diallo is a “lambatarian,” to Milan Momcilovic saying that he desires to interrupt Kentucky’s all-time 3-point report.
However it was Mark Pope sharing that this staff is “in all probability the most effective taking pictures staff I’ve ever had” that was seemingly the most important takeaway.

Pope’s full assertion was, “We’re strolling into the season with an entire bunch of confidence and optimism about what we are able to develop into. I believe this staff on the offensive facet of the ball is lengthy and expert. It may well actually shoot. It is in all probability the most effective taking pictures staff I’ve ever had.”
Nicely, it exhibits some big-time confidence in his staff to have the ability to put the ball within the basket from downtown.
All through the years, Pope has coached some elite taking pictures groups, however there’s an actual probability this staff may take the cake for the most effective.
At Kentucky, his groups shot 34% final 12 months, and 38% in 12 months one. At BYU, his groups shot 35% in 2023-24, 34% in 2022-23, 35% in 2021-22, 37% in 2020-21, and 42% in his first 12 months in Provo in 2019-20.

These numbers present a curler coaster of taking pictures percentages all through his profession. His first 12 months in Provo noticed the Cougars change into the most effective 3-point taking pictures staff in America. Now, he believes this 12 months’s staff could possibly be even higher than BYU’s 2019-20 staff.
Beginning with the most effective shooter within the sport is a good way to construct the most effective taking pictures staff you have ever had, and Pope did that with Momcilovic. Other than him, the staff has some questions general, however the numbers have already gone up for gamers this offseason. Zoom Diallo at Washington shot 32% from the 3-point vary final 12 months, taking a 14% leap from his freshman 12 months. Alex Wilkins shot 33% from downtown in his freshman season earlier than hitting the switch portal and touchdown in Lexington. Malachi Moreno took solely 3 3PT photographs (0-3) final season as a freshman, however I believe we are able to count on that quantity to go up and add some makes to it as properly.
The offense will not lack scoring, whether or not it is from 3-point vary or across the rim; Kentucky will determine find out how to put the ball within the basket. In that quote, Pope talked about them being “lengthy and expert,” which has been very clearly true from what we have seen so far from Huge Blue Insanity, Professional Day, and different behind-the-scenes clips from the socials.
Will or not it’s the most effective taking pictures staff he is ever had? Time will inform. From the surface trying in, some gamers should take steps ahead for that to be a actuality, however he is aware of higher than we do, so I’m anticipating this group to be across the low 40s in staff proportion with tons of creativity and a ton of shooters on the ground always.
