Justin Herbert delivered a masterclass performance over 6,100 miles from home, leading the Los Angeles Chargers to a stunning 27-21 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Brazil’s season opener.
The Chargers quarterback capped off his brilliant night with a crucial 19-yard scramble on third-and-14, securing the win with just 2:14 remaining on the clock. Herbert’s game-clinching run provided the perfect finish to an outstanding display that saw him complete 25 of 34 passes for 318 yards and three touchdowns.
Breaking the Chiefs’ Dominance
Herbert’s exceptional play helped end the Chargers’ frustrating seven-game losing streak against their AFC West rivals. More impressively, the victory snapped Kansas City’s historic run of 17 consecutive wins in one-possession games, a streak that included playoff contests.
“Justin was phenomenal today in every way with pinpoint accuracy,” head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters postgame. “His overall toughness and complete leadership stood out. The way he sealed the game with his mobility was incredible quarterback play.”
The sixth-year signal-caller posted a stellar 131.7 passer rating while adding 32 rushing yards on seven attempts, outperforming Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes in a tightly contested battle.
Historic International Achievement
Herbert joined elite company with his Brazil performance, becoming just the fourth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 300-plus yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions in an international game. Only Tom Brady (twice) and Drew Brees had previously accomplished this feat.
Despite the statistical excellence and rivalry significance, Herbert remained focused on the bigger picture.
“This was important because it was our opener,” Herbert explained. “We faced a quality opponent that we respect greatly. I’m pleased with how all three units executed today.”
Aerial Attack Surprises Chiefs Defense
Many expected the Chargers to lean heavily on their ground game featuring rookie Omarion Hampton and newcomer Najee Harris. Instead, offensive coordinator Greg Roman unleashed Herbert through the air, particularly on play-action where the quarterback completed 9 of 11 attempts for 169 yards.
The passing attack found immediate success when Herbert connected with Quentin Johnston for 33 yards on his opening completion. Johnston would finish with two touchdown receptions, while veteran Keenan Allen – returning to Los Angeles after a one-year absence – also found the end zone.
Clutch Performance Under Pressure
Herbert demonstrated his composure throughout the contest, answering every Chiefs scoring drive with one of his own. After Kansas City cut the deficit to 13-12 following a missed extra point, Herbert orchestrated a methodical 12-play, 74-yard touchdown drive.
When Mahomes responded with a 37-yard scoring connection to Travis Kelce, Herbert immediately countered with another 74-yard scoring march, this one ending with Johnston’s 23-yard touchdown reception with 5:02 remaining.
The defining moment came on the final drive when Herbert appeared to target Johnston before scrambling for the game-sealing first down.
“I was looking for Q, but they doubled him,” Herbert recalled. “I recognized the man coverage meant no safety help, so I escaped the pocket and saw open field ahead.”
Perfect Start to 2025 Campaign
The victory marked an ideal beginning to the Chargers’ 2025 season, with Herbert once again proving his ability to perform in high-pressure situations against elite competition. The win also provided sweet redemption, as Los Angeles last defeated Kansas City by the same six-point margin during a 30-24 triumph on September 21, 2021.
With this statement victory in Brazil, the Chargers have positioned themselves as legitimate contenders in the competitive AFC West, led by Herbert’s continued excellence under center.
