MICT took it to R500,000 after which to R1 million. JSK stayed in it and took it to R1.5 million. MICT upped it to R2 million. JSK took it to R2.5 million and at last outbid their rivals at R2.9 million (Rs 1.69 crore). The 18-year-old from Johannesburg, nonetheless a matric pupil at St David’s Marist Inanda, was acquired at 14.5 instances his base worth.
"Robbie [Robin Peterson, the MICT] and his crew noticed the identical expertise that we noticed in Jason. He’s an area boy from Joburg that we've tracked for a very long time. We had a expertise scout camp a 12 months in the past, which he attended. So he was somebody on our radar," mentioned Albie Morkel, head coach of JSK, in an interplay facilitated by the SA20 after the Season 5 Public sale.
"Did I believe he was going to go for that sum of money? No, positively not. However he's somebody that we actually wished. I believe in that Rookie and now the U-23 spot, each franchise is in search of that man who's going to be the subsequent Lhuan-dre (Pretorius) or the subsequent (Dewald) Brevis. Whether or not he will probably be that, time will inform. However he's a very proficient man."

"He's bought an excellent administration workforce round him. So I'm certain, as a cricketer, with this cash tag round his head now, over his head, they are going to handle it effectively. And from our facet, from a training viewpoint and a franchise viewpoint, we'll give him each alternative to develop into the participant that we hope he’ll turn into," he continued.
Over a 12 months in the past, nevertheless, he was enjoying within the Faculties SA20 Finals, a T20 competitors created by the SA20 and Cricket South Africa (CSA) in 2024 to identify and encourage younger expertise. Representing St David's Marist, Rowles's workforce completed runners-up in Quantity 1 earlier than he captained his college in Quantity 2 final 12 months.
Rowles, a left-hand batter who may bowl left-arm spin, has proven loads of potential in South African cricket since. He was South Africa's main run-scorer within the Beneath-19 World Cup earlier this 12 months, scoring 280 runs in 5 innings at a median of 70 and a strike price of 112. Though 42-year-old Faf du Plessis earned as a lot as Rowles (R2.7 million) on the 2026 SA20 mini-auction, the flavour across the T20 franchise world is centred on children. Take 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, final IPL season's Orange Cap winner, as an ideal instance.
"The work is being accomplished on recognising expertise, the scouting behind the scenes. I believe the mindset to advertise youth is essential. And clearly, you're speaking about Sooryavanshi within the IPL. There are a variety of U-23s, younger gamers concerned in our event. To assume that Dewald Brevis continues to be U-23. And then you definitely've bought Jason Rowles fetching the best quantity on the public sale. I believe for us, we try to develop the sport of cricket. These little tales actually are nuggets when it comes to serving to construct the form of future expertise and preserving cricket as a high-profile sport in our nation that individuals need to be part of," mentioned SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith.
Recognizing youth, nurturing it and investing in it’s a double-edged sword. How a lot publicity is an excessive amount of publicity? How do you guarantee their expertise stays untouched amid the exterior noise of hype, expectations and large cash? It’s one thing Indian cricket is grappling with in relation to Sooryavanshi. Now, with Rowles coming into that dialog, albeit at 18, Graeme Smith feels the gamers deserve the large bucks for his or her expertise whereas additionally receiving help if wanted.
"For those who take a look at the world of sports activities, younger sports activities expertise is being paid very effectively throughout the board. Cricket is enjoying catch-up now with non-public possession when it comes to funding in youth and the elevated professionalism of the sport. So I believe these tales are nice," mentioned former South Africa skipper Smith.
"Clearly, from a administration perspective, we’ve the Gamers' Affiliation in South Africa, which has a very good system in place when it comes to supporting gamers, guiding them on monetary funding and giving them help across the sport to assist information them. However when you're adequate on the earth, you should do effectively. And credit score to the younger expertise proper now that's being recognised and supported," he continued.
A 12 months after Brevis, then 22, turned the costliest signing in SA20 historical past (R16.5 million) and delivered on that promise for Pretoria Capitals, scoring 370 runs at a median of 41.11 and a strike price of 156.12 to emerge because the second-highest run-scorer in Season 4, it stays to be seen how 18-year-old Rowles fares for his native franchise.
