Every week, I am going to publish two film-room previews: one specializing in the offense and one on the protection. These are primarily film-based, specializing in the schemes, tendencies, and matchups that would form Sunday’s sport, with all statistics coming from the Fantasy Factors Information Suite. I additionally document a video model for Patreon, the place I break down the performs in better element and the place you possibly can additional assist my work.
The Jaguars’ protection presents a tough matchup for an Eagles offense that desperately wants consistency. I got here away impressed by how nicely they do the fundamentals. They will rush with 4, play a number of coverages behind it, and make operating the soccer extraordinarily tough. Anthony Campanile has a well-coached unit, however the Eagles can assault this secondary in the event that they shield lengthy sufficient. That final half is the priority.

Cross Protection
The start line is the go rush. The Jaguars needn’t ship 5 or 6 defenders to make quarterbacks uncomfortable, which supplies Campanile loads of freedom with seven defenders behind the push. Their stress charge by 4 video games is 36.5%, regardless of blitzing on solely 26.9% of dropbacks. The entrance that create issues without having the coordinator to fabricate a free runner each snap.
Josh Hines-Allen is their greatest go rusher, and Jordan Mailata ought to see loads of him. Hines-Allen has rushed from the defensive proper on roughly 83% of his pass-rush reps, making that probably the most predictable particular person matchup up entrance. Mailata has a giant job this week. If the Eagles have to maintain including assist to each edges, it turns into a lot tougher to place sufficient receivers into the sample to stretch the protection.
Travon Walker offers them extra flexibility. He predominantly rushes from the defensive left, so Markel Bell ought to anticipate to face him often at proper sort out, however Walker additionally strikes to the other facet and kicks inside. Within the instance beneath, the Jaguars put Walker subsequent to Hines-Allen and nonetheless generate stress with 4. That issues as a result of the Eagles can not construct their safety plan across the assumption that the 2 important threats will keep on reverse edges. They’ve to acknowledge the place the hazard is on every snap and talk it. Which, is horrifying…

I might anticipate the Jaguars to point out stress appears, however this might provide some aid from the fixed five-man pressures the Eagles have confronted just lately. In fact, Campanile has watched these video games too. If an offense retains failing to type out the blitz, there may be each cause to check whether or not it has fastened the issue. The Eagles want safety checks and quick passing solutions out there, even towards a protection that normally prefers to hurry 4.
The play beneath sums up the protection properly. Walker creates stress, the protection holds up, and the quarterback has nowhere helpful to go together with the soccer. There may be nothing significantly unique about it. Everybody understands the project, and the entrance wins. I feel the go rush is best than the secondary, however that distinction turns into irrelevant if the ball can not get out earlier than the push arrives. The Eagles have to offer Jalen Hurts an opportunity to use these downfield alternatives.
Behind that entrance, the Jaguars use plenty of zone protection, with Cowl 3, Cowl 4 and Cowl 6 all that includes prominently. They typically start with a two-high shell and rotate into Cowl 1 or Cowl 3. Hurts can not assume that the pre-snap image tells him the place the protection will end. Their man protection has been significantly efficient this 12 months, whereas the zone outcomes have been much less spectacular. I might look to stretch their zone defenders with routes at totally different depths and make them deal with multiple risk, relatively than relying solely on receivers to win remoted matchups.

Travis Hunter’s improvement has made this secondary significantly extra harmful. I used to be an enormous fan of Hunter popping out, and I at all times considered him as a cornerback first. His current performances have bolstered that view. His skill to go up and assault the soccer is excellent. He has the athleticism to shut house that appears out there when the quarterback begins his throwing movement, and the ball expertise to complete when he will get there.
There are nonetheless moments when a veteran receiver can catch him hesitating as he turns, or use bodily contact on the break to knock him off stability. He may also be overly keen to leap a route. However that is a formidable younger nook, and throwing a hopeful contested ball in his path is a harmful option to assault him.
Jarrian Jones is the extra inviting matchup. The movie reveals issues finding the soccer and defending vertical pictures, and opponents have been keen to maintain testing him. I might wish to make him flip and run, then pressure him to search out the ball downfield. The issue is that with out DeVonta Smith, I’m not positive the Eagles have sufficient juice to use that weak point constantly.

Montaric Brown is one other exterior nook to problem when he’s on the sector. He has allowed some important good points, and velocity is the clearest concern in his scouting profile. Each Brown and Jones play on both facet, so the Eagles have to determine the defender relatively than assume the matchup will at all times be out there to the identical receiver.
There are additionally alternatives behind the safeties after they get aggressive and soar beneath routes. Posts excessive stood out in my notes. I would love the Eagles to make use of beneath threats to affect these defenders after which assault the house behind them. The Jaguars’ deep-pass EPA allowed ranks twenty fifth by 4 video games, which reinforces the explosive alternatives on movie. Nonetheless, these routes want time. Calling a deep shot means little or no if the safety can not give it an opportunity to develop.
Run Protection
The run protection is superb, and DaVon Hamilton is a large cause why. He’s a tough nostril sort out to maneuver, and he disrupts inside runs earlier than the offense can set up the blocks it wants. He makes it tough to create house within the center and helps maintain the linebackers in place to complete.

This has been a very disagreeable protection to run towards from underneath middle. By means of 4 video games, these runs have produced simply 167 yards on 58 carries, averaging 2.88 yards per try. That may be a fairly clear warning for an Eagles offense that has already struggled to make its under-center run sport work. Personally, I might not select this opponent because the week to maintain forcing it and hope all the pieces out of the blue clicks.
Ventrell Miller is the opposite participant who actually stood out. He strikes nicely sideline to sideline and finishes tackles in house. Hines-Allen can also be a robust run defender on the sting. Between the inside disruption and the pursuit behind it, this protection makes standard runs tough to maintain.
If the Eagles lean on under-center exterior zone once more, I might be shocked if it out of the blue turns into the reply this week.
Once I went by the positive-EPA runs, pin/pull, reverses, and quarterback involvement stored showing. The Jaguars are aggressive, flowing towards the soccer, and offenses have had success getting them shifting a technique earlier than attacking the bottom. Receiver reverses are value having within the plan. They’ve confronted solely 4 receiver carries, so the statistical pattern is tiny, however these performs assist a weak point that stood out on fiom.

I might go heavy shotgun, unfold the protection out, and use movement and misdirection to make the linebackers hesitate.
This additionally must be a big quarterback-run week. Hurts can change the numbers and pressure the bottom defender to respect one thing apart from the operating again. Opposing scrambles have produced optimistic EPA towards the Jaguars, too, exhibiting that quarterbacks have discovered alternatives as soon as they escape the construction of the play. That isn’t proof that each designed quarterback run will work, but it surely provides to the case for making Hurts an lively a part of the speeding assault. I’m simply not significantly hopeful we’ll see sufficient of it.
Remaining Ideas
I respect this protection, however there’s a path to shifting the soccer. The Eagles want to guard nicely sufficient to check Jones and the house behind aggressive safeties, whereas making the run sport much less predictable by shotgun formations, misdirection, and Hurts’ legs.
Commercial
The matchup that worries me most is the Jaguars’ entrance towards the Eagles’ safety. I don’t anticipate this to be straightforward. However I might discover it extremely irritating if the Eagles responded by repeating the identical under-center exterior zone method and asking a depleted passing sport to rescue them on third down. There are issues to assault right here. The offense wants to point out that it will probably alter.
Lastly, if you’re on the sport, be sure to drop me a remark! I will be there!
