INDIANAPOLIS – n remembers the textual content effectively.
Halfway by way of the sixth-overall decide’s first coaching camp and preseason with the s in August 2018 and monitoring towards beginning, Nelson’s new normal supervisor wasn’t happy with the Notre Dame standout’s efficiency and execution on the sector.
He might’ve discovered Nelson after apply or a sport or back-channeled his displeasure by way of the teaching workers, however d simply fired off a stream-of-consciousness textual content and performed it straight.
"Proper now, you’re taking part in like a median guard," the message learn.
“That’s the sort of accountability he had together with his gamers and he pushed me to be even higher,” the eight-time Professional Bowler and six-time AP All-Professional choice stated. “Yeah, respect him.”
The sentiment was shared all through the s' locker room Wednesday, 48 hours after members of the group realized of principal staff proprietor n’s determination to fireplace the s. The information got here within the wake of an embarrassing 26-20 dwelling loss to the beforehand winless Tennessee Titans. The sport e and thru the tunnels of Lucas Oil Stadium, having fallen to 2-4.
“Ready would solely delay the vital work that should start now,” Irsay-Gordon wrote in a Monday assertion.
Irsay-Gordon closed with a pledge that her franchise would stay centered and pushed by competitors, enchancment and profitable.
Seventy-three of the 76 gamers within the locker room might level to Ballard because the central purpose they're in Indianapolis – 32 of them chosen by Ballard’s entrance workplace throughout his 10 drafts. And with that comes a way of duty.
“Throughout coaching camp and OTAs, we had been all preaching that everyone has an element within the success and failures of this staff, so I really feel like all of us have a sure half in it,” stated backup quarterback r., whom Ballard chosen together with his highest decide because the Colts' GM, fourth-overall in 2023. “I texted him when it occurred and I simply instructed him I appreciated him for believing in me and having me right here.
“I do hope every little thing goes the best way he desires it to go or plans for it to be, nevertheless it does harm a little bit bit. He was a terrific man, and he has an element in all of us being right here. I at all times will eternally respect that.”
If Richardson was Ballard’s highest decide, All-Professional cornerback r might have been the previous Colts GM’s greatest gamble.
Ballard’s Colts sat 7-2 atop the AFC final season with the NFL’s most potent offense led by a pair of MVP candidates in new beginning quarterback s, whom Ballard had signed that offseason in free company, and longtime star operating again r. The protection, although, had essential holes for a schedule that included six straight video games to finish the season in opposition to eventual playoff groups. Ballard made the kind of all-in transfer that had been uncommon throughout his tenure, one thing Irsay-Gordon had pushed him towards in latest months.
Ballard surrendered the staff’s subsequent two first-round picks, plus younger receiver prospect A.D. Mitchell, for the two-time All-Professional and 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Yr who had signed the NFL’s richest-ever deal for a cornerback that summer season. Analysts argued over the worth, however nobody might doubt Ballard’s dedication to serving to the franchise finish its then-four-year playoff drought.
“We respect every little thing Ballard did. Clearly, I in all probability wouldn’t be right here with out him,” Gardner stated Wednesday. “I respect him. He’s a terrific individual. … As gamers, we’re at all times going to take the blame. It’s a win-and-loss-based league and we positively really feel that method, however we’ll preserve going to work.”
That sentiment nonetheless lives with Jones, who in Gardner’s first sport as a Colt suffered a fractured fibula in opposition to the Falcons that hampered his play. After two straight losses, Jones would tear his proper Achilles tendon 1 / 4 into an eventual Week 14 loss in Jacksonville that price him the ultimate 4 video games.
Jones has been nowhere near the identical participant this season. Hampered by the lack of No. 1 receiver e to a reaggravated heel harm Pierce initially had surgical procedure on in late March and a younger protection that has considerably regressed, Jones and the remainder of Ballard’s roster have severely missed the mark six video games into 2026.
“I definitely do," Jones stated when requested if his play contributed to Ballard's firing. "I believe all of us do, and that’s the powerful half about it’s your play and the outcomes of those video games results folks on this constructing. There’s a particular duty there, and you are feeling that as gamers, and I really feel that as a quarterback.
“I believe there’s a response right here within the locker room, inside the constructing, and also you perceive kinda what’s at stake, so we all know we’ve obtained to play higher. We’ve obtained to win and we’re taking that very critically.”
However there’s one other legacy that Ballard left.
That participant the Colts’ now-ex-GM despatched an digital kick within the butt to earlier than he’d performed his first NFL sport doesn’t precisely share the identical sentiments as his teammates. Nelson, e and the prospect of hitting free company for the primary time, continues to be powered by an unrelenting motor.

Nelson took possession of then-Colts head coach Frank Reich’s firing halfway by way of the 2022 season, at a time the offensive line proved inconsistent – “I really feel like there’s instances this season that I let down Coach Frank and contributed to his firing,” Nelson stated 4 years in the past. This time, one of many NFL’s greatest guards is assured he’s taking part in his greatest.
“I really feel like each single day, I give my very best, so I’ve no regrets concerning the work I put in, and due to this fact the efficiency I’ve given this 12 months,” Nelson stated. “I actually give every little thing – that method, on Sunday, whether or not I play good or I play unhealthy, there are not any regrets.
“I believe numerous guys had nice relationships with Chris, however on the identical time, when somebody goes down in a sport, you don’t actually have time to mourn or take into consideration that. It’s subsequent man up, and we assault. We assault the following week.”
n and n cowl the Colts all season. Get extra protection on V and with the r.
