Only a small error in the last race on Saturday prevented Spain from finishing the first day of the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in a comfortable first position. The Spain SailGP Team shone in Portsmouth with a spectacular 2nd and 1st in the first two races of the day, but will have to continue fighting tomorrow to add a new Grand Prix final. The competition implemented the new divided fleet format announced yesterday, Friday, which will remain in place until the end of the season.
In the first race of the weekend, the Spain SailGP Team showed why it is one of the favorites to win this championship. After a bad start, the F50 Victoria was able to come back from last position, devouring its rivals one by oneto the point of challenging Gilles Scott’s Canada for first place, who led the race from start to finish.
The second round offered precisely a spectacular head-to-head between Spaniards and Canadians, after a good start from ours. Canada kept ‘Los Gallos’ at bay throughout the race, until, in the last stretch, Diego Botín said it was time to attack. Spain chose the opposite buoy to Canada and, meter by meter, began to take ground on its rival, whom it overtook at the last buoy after a heart-stopping overtake.
In the third and final race of the day, Spain did well again, placing fourth. However, Upon arrival at the second buoy of the race course, the Spain SailGP Team took a risk and suffered a penalty for not leaving room for maneuver for the Brazilian team.. Our team had to put themselves in last place and, although they tried tirelessly, they were not able to come back and score points in that round.
At the end of the first day in Portsmouth, The Spain SailGP Team is third in its group, with nine points, one less than Canada and two less than New Zealand. Spain will have to push to climb at least one place, given that the first two in each group advance to the final.
