the president dGetafe CF, Ángel Torres, spoke to Radio MARCA Madrid Sur to take stock of a season that is about to end and left several important clues about the immediate future of the azulón club. The leader confirmed that José Bordalás’ continuity could be resolved in a matter of hours: “I have already met three or four times this week and I think that before Saturday there will be news”. In addition, he praised the level of Luis Milla, ensuring that “He deserved to at least be preselected” for the Spanish team, and recognized that the market will once again be conditioned by the club’s financial needs. “This year we had no choice but to sell,” he admitted, although he made it clear that “there is a lot of work done” regarding possible incorporations and renewals of several important players.

Torres also took stock of a season that he described as “strange” due to the stadium works and the numerous injuries suffered during the course, although he rated the team’s reaction since January very positively. “The team resurfaced and I have been happier,” said the president, who highlighted the defensive solidity of the blue team as one of the keys to success. Now, the big objective is to secure European qualification: “I hope to be in the Conference or the Europa League if Celta fails.” The top Azulón leader did not hesitate to qualify as “a great success” the possibility of finishing in continental positions after “how bad we have been all year”, and took the opportunity to ask the fans to support the team in the last game without invading the field of play for safety reasons.
“The VAR is doing a lot of damage to refereeing”
One of the most compelling moments of the interview came when he talked about arbitration and financial fair play. Torres defended the level of the Spanish referees, although he directly pointed out the VAR as the main problem: “The VAR is doing a lot of damage to refereeing.” The president considers that the current system harms the referees themselves and believes it is necessary “correct” some aspects related to its operation. Furthermore, he acknowledged that even he does not fully understand some economic regulations imposed by LaLiga: “Don’t feel self-conscious, I don’t understand it either and I’ve been around for 30 years.” Torres explained that many clubs live conditioned by the famous “1:1” rule and recognized that, without important sales, competing becomes much more complicated.

On the more human and relaxed side, Ángel Torres left some anecdotes from his more than two decades at the helm of the Azulón club. The president confessed that he continues to lead a completely normal life in Getafe, where he has breakfast every morning with friends, visits neighborhood shops and spends hours playing dominoes. “I am a normal person, I like to entertain myself,” he assured between laughs. He also recalled curious moments with historical coaches like Quique Sánchez Flores, who he said ended up crying when he thought he was going to be fired and ended up renewed.

In addition, he talked about the great atmosphere in the locker room and joked about the state of happiness of some players when they celebrate victories in the locker room: “I’ve been seeing Milla lately… I think she’s lost it.” Between jokes, memories and reflections, Torres showed why he is one of the most recognizable figures in Spanish football.
