It is beautiful to assume that the Baltimore Ravens may have virtually a decade of one of many best quarterbacks of all time and never make the Tremendous Bowl as soon as. Nevertheless it could be headed that method.
The Lamar Jackson period was summed up pretty nicely Sunday. Jackson was again from an ankle damage. The 2-time MVP’s return introduced hope that he may elevate the Ravens again to being a Tremendous Bowl contender, beginning with a win on the Buffalo Payments. One offensive play in, all that hope was gone.

Jackson suffered a thumb damage following by on a move on the Ravens’ first play on offense. He went to the locker room and was dominated out shortly after.
Jackson was on the sideline for the second half with a black brace on his proper hand. By the point he returned to the sideline he was watching undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano make his NFL debut, after Tyler Huntley left with a toe damage. Baltimore fell to 4-4 with a 36-10 loss to the Payments. Usually a .500 document at the start of November would not be the tip of anybody’s season but it surely looks like it for Baltimore after Sunday. The Ravens protection tried to maintain the group within the recreation in opposition to the Payments for so long as it may however there was merely no offense with out Jackson. That would be the case going ahead, and it looks like Jackson may miss a big period of time.
When Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield dislocated his proper thumb earlier this season he missed three video games. Jackson has taken his time getting back from accidents, a reality that has been irritating in Baltimore, and that needs to be accounted for. By the point he is again, the Ravens could be nicely out of the AFC North race.

And if it was only one recreation in opposition to the Payments, or perhaps a few weeks going ahead, the temper could be totally different. Nevertheless it’s far more than that. Jackson is in his ninth season with the Ravens, and the dream of an thrilling period having a satisfying conclusion could be fading quick.
Jackson has one 12 months left on a five-year, $260 million contract extension. A number of media studies have mentioned there have been no current negotiations. Ravens proprietor Steve Bisciotti mentioned in January he did not need the contract challenge dragging into April, and now it is November. Each side have mentioned they need the connection to proceed but it surely’s far more difficult than it was when he was given the franchise tag in 2023 and he got here again on an enormous deal.
Jackson will flip 30 in January. Accidents have gotten an enormous a part of his story. Given how a lot he depends on his mobility, his recreation won’t age nicely into his 30s. There was additionally a scathing piece by the Baltimore Solar after final season that reshaped the Jackson narrative, portray him as a participant who’s tough to work with. All the pieces is extra convoluted with Jackson’s future than it was just a few years in the past. It is particularly arduous to navigate due to how good Jackson is. He is a three-time first-team All-Professional, entered Sunday’s video games second all time in passer score whereas additionally being the best operating quarterback ever.

The Ravens can entertain buying and selling him — if they do not wish to go ahead with Jackson after 2027 they’d should make that transfer to recoup some worth — however everybody is aware of the probabilities of discovering a quarterback who will be nearly as good as Jackson are virtually zero. Seeing Baltimore wrestle with Huntley and Fagnano at quarterback provides the Ravens a have a look at what the long run could possibly be with out Jackson, and the ground may be very low. But when this season goes south, it appears increasingly doubtless {that a} divorce is on the desk subsequent offseason.
The story of this season hasn’t been written but. Assuming Jackson returns, there’s an opportunity to arrange a very totally different ending. And, maybe he and the Ravens merely come to a contract extension like they did final time. It is not just like the Ravens have a succession plan in place. However with one play in Buffalo on Sunday, Jackson’s future with the Ravens, what comes subsequent for Baltimore and the ripple results of these choices across the NFL turned the main target. It appeared like a turning level, and never an excellent one for anybody concerned.
Listed here are the remainder of the winners and losers from Week 8 of the NFL season:
WINNERS
The 6-2 Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steelers began the season by squeezing out shut wins. Because the weeks go on, they’re began to look higher.

The Cleveland Browns are usually not the litmus take a look at, regardless of their 5-2 document coming into Sunday’s recreation. Cleveland nonetheless has a foul quarterback state of affairs and might’t stay off last-second wins all season. Nonetheless, the Steelers left little question, which is the signal of an excellent group. They blasted the Browns 27-6.
All the pieces was optimistic. The Steelers protection performed very nicely. The operating recreation was incredible once more with Jaylen Warren main the way in which. Aaron Rodgers was environment friendly throughout a recreation through which he did not have to do a lot. The Steelers have a sterling document and are getting higher. That is an indication of fine teaching. Mike McCarthy is off to a positive begin to his Pittsburgh profession.
Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers performed like a service academy group on Sunday, giving up on the passing recreation altogether within the rain. It was OK as a result of Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell have been incredible in a 16-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons. The Buccaneers did not full a move, however Irving had 170 speeding yards and a landing and Gainwell added 140 extra.
it was the primary time since 1974 {that a} group received with out a completion. The Buffalo Payments pulled that off within the rain and heavy wind with Joe Ferguson finishing 0-of-2 passes.

There have been completions to Buccaneers, however they got here from Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Penix threw 4 interceptions. Penix struggled within the circumstances, whereas the Buccaneers did not even attempt to throw it.
The operating recreation was sufficient for the Buccaneers’ second straight win. The NFC South is dangerous once more, so even a group that began 1-5 and has accomplished fewer than 10 passes the previous two weeks ought to nonetheless have professional hope of profitable the division.
Kirk Cousins: Each week, Cousins could be enjoying for his job. After the Las Vegas Raiders had a four-game shedding streak it appeared like a change could possibly be made. Raiders coach Klint Kubiak mentioned final Sunday every thing can be thought-about, together with a quarterback change, although he walked that again the following day.
Cousins will maintain his job not less than one other week. Cousins performed very nicely, throwing for 3 touchdowns and getting one other on a quarterback sneak because the Raiders beat the New York Jets 38-33. The Raiders allowed the Jets to attain on their first six possessions, however the offense was adequate to beat that. Cousins was excellent, and sensible in concentrating on Brock Bowers repeatedly. Bowers had 92 yards and two touchdowns.

Cousins even bought in a celebration after the landing, although he appeared very very similar to a 38-year-old quarterback doing it.
In some unspecified time in the future this season, prime total choose Fernando Mendoza may be very prone to begin. Nevertheless it will not be straight away, after Cousins had an excellent recreation.
LOSERS
Jonathan Taylor: The Indianapolis Colts most likely ought to have simply deactivated Taylor on Sunday. There wasn’t a lot level in enjoying him.
The Colts are in for a tough end to the season. After buying and selling guard Quenton Nelson and defensive lineman DeForest Buckner this week, the Colts have been wholly uncompetitive in a 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. They trailed 28-0 at halftime. It is the type of loss that might lead the group to fireplace Shane Steichen, even when they have been seemingly attempting to get by the remainder of the season with him. The hassle from the protection on a number of Jaguars touchdowns was severely missing. It was an totally embarrassing efficiency for the whole franchise.
Taylor is the one massive commerce piece left, and the story will unfold one in all two methods earlier than the deadline: Taylor’s incredible profession with the Colts will come to an finish with the groups in tatters, or he’ll proceed to play with a group which may solely win a recreation or two the remainder of the season if they’ll muster a win in any respect. For Taylor’s sake he’ll get dealt, as a result of the remainder of the Colts’ season will likely be miserable.

Vikings offense: Lastly, the Minnesota Vikings’ protection could not save the day.
The Vikings ought to have been capable of rating loads in opposition to a questionable Detroit Lions protection, however have been capable of put up 15 factors. The protection held robust till Jameson Williams scored a go-ahead landing within the last 5 minutes, and the Vikings’ offense could not reply. Detroit received 19-15, that means there are not any undefeated groups left this season.
The Vikings have been nice on offense and questionable on offense all season. It did not matter for the primary six video games, which have been all wins. Kyler Murray wasn’t the issue on Sunday however he wasn’t nice both, with 210 passing yards in opposition to a protection that has been giving up a ton of factors and yards this season. In some unspecified time in the future if the Vikings wish to win the NFC North they’re going to want some extra offensive punch. It is nonetheless missing. And it’ll actually get uncomfortable in Minnesota if J.J. McCarthy, who they traded just a few weeks in the past, continues to play nicely with the Giants.
