The Pacific Division-leading Vegas Golden Knights have made another massive splash, acquiring top-tier defenseman Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames in a Sunday blockbuster.
With the NHL trade deadline approaching and Vegas eyeing another deep playoff run, the front office has secured one of the most coveted puck-moving blueliners on the market.
The Trade Breakdown
To land the 29-year-old Swede, Vegas paid a significant price to help Calgary jumpstart their retooling process.
To Vegas Golden Knights:
-
Rasmus Andersson (D) – Calgary retains 50% of his remaining salary.
To Calgary Flames:
-
Zach Whitecloud (D)
-
Abram Wiebe (Prospect)
-
2027 Conditional 1st-Round Pick
-
2028 Conditional 2nd-Round Pick (Becomes a 1st-rounder if Vegas wins the 2025 Stanley Cup).
Why the Deal Happened Now
The trade landscape shifted rapidly over the weekend. According to Flames GM Craig Conroy, it became clear in the final hours of negotiations that Andersson would not be signing an extension with any team prior to the trade.
“That definitely changed the way we had to negotiate and what we got back in return,” Conroy admitted, noting that they had to pivot their strategy once free agency became the player’s definitive path.
Andersson is currently in the final year of a six-year, $27.3 million contract. By retaining half of his salary, Calgary maximized the draft capital and prospect depth returned in the deal.
A Boost for the Vegas Blueline
Vegas has been aggressive this season, already having landed superstar Mitch Marner earlier in the year. The addition of Andersson addresses a critical need on defense. With Alex Pietrangelo away from the team and Brayden McNabb sidelined by injury, Andersson provides immediate stability and offensive production.
-
Production: Andersson already has 30 points (10G, 20A) this season.
-
Durability: He has recorded at least 30 points in four consecutive seasons.
-
Chemistry: He reunites with former Flames partner Noah Hanifin, a duo that spent over five seasons together in Alberta.
The Return for Calgary
In Zach Whitecloud, the Flames receive a battle-tested, Stanley Cup-winning defenseman with two years left on his deal. Whitecloud was one of the few remaining “Original Misfits” from the Golden Knights’ inaugural season.
The Flames also add Abram Wiebe, a rising defensive prospect, and significant draft capital to help navigate a difficult season where they currently sit 13th in the Western Conference.
What’s Next?
Andersson is expected to join the Golden Knights immediately as they look to extend their seven-game winning streak. Meanwhile, Calgary continues to evaluate their roster as the focus shifts toward the 2027 and 2028 drafts.
