The New York Knicks are the new NBA champions after beating the San Antonio Spurs 90-94 in the fifth and final game of the NBA Finals after completing, once again, another comeback for the ages after trailing by 15 points in the third quarter (68-53). A situation that could not be explained without the figure of its best player, Jalen Brunson, who with his 45 points, 29 of them in the second half and 15 in the last quarter, has pushed the New York franchise to achieve a championship ring 53 years later: with a partial 7-21, Mike Brown’s men manage to sign a season to remember, as they become the first team in the history of the league to achieve a double after winning the Emirates NBA Cup in the month of January.
In this way, the names of Mike Brown’s squad remain in the golden pages of the history of a club that, after a journey in the desert, full of years in which they did not even manage to qualify for the post-season: in 24 of these years they could not get in. Furthermore, they have done it, again, making an epic comeback, since in all the games they have started worse than their rival…
It’s not that the Spurs were particularly brilliant at the start of a game in which only Wembanyama, with his points and defensive intimidation in the paint, seemed to be accepted. The proof of this is that they scored 15 points in eight minutes. But in defense they were, since the Knicks, who have been worse in all the first 12′ of this tie, were tremendously thick in attack (2/16 in field goals).
