The Government of Pedro Sánchez has suffered a new parliamentary setback this Tuesday in the Congress of Deputies after the repeal of the decree law that contemplated the extension of rental contracts. The initiative, promoted by Sumar and approved a month ago in the Council of Ministers, has fallen due to not obtaining the necessary support, evidencing the fragility of the majority and opening a new crack in the coalition.
The vote ended with 166 votes in favor compared to 177 votes against, to which five abstentions were added, that of the five PNV deputies, decisive for the final result. Junts has also joined the rejection of the Popular Party and Vox, leaving the Executive without room to carry out the measure.
The decree contemplated the extension of up to two years for rental contracts that expired between March 21, 2026 and December 31, 2027, in addition to limiting annual rent increases to 2%. Despite the warnings about the lack of support, Sumar chose not to modify the text, with the intention that “each person would portray themselves with their vote.”
After the defeat, tensions have emerged within the Government itself. From Sumar they have openly criticized the lack of involvement of the PSOE in the negotiation. Representative Tesh Sidi has assured that the Ministry of Housing “is not doing the work it has to do”, while Alberto Ibáñez has questioned the public absence of the minister of the sector.
The criticisms have gone further since Compromís, where Águeda Micó has come to question the suitability of the Minister of Housing to lead these policies, in statements that have caused discomfort in the socialist wing of the Executive.
From the PSOE, the spokesperson in the Congress of Deputies, Patxi López, He has urged his partners not to choose the wrong adversary and has defended his group’s commitment to carrying out the measure, pointing out that self-criticism should be directed at those who voted against.
The question now is whether the Government will try to promote a new text that allows the extension of rents to be recovered. The second vice president and minister of Labor and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, He assured before the vote that there is always a “plan B”, although the rest of the Executive has avoided speaking out after this new defeat that once again tests the stability of the coalition.
