the case of Daniel Adongo



The expulsion of Daniel Ogama Adongo, the first Kenyan-born player to play in the NFL, has once again placed the immigration debate at the center of American news. The former Indianapolis Colts linebacker was deported from the United States for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)who assured that The former player had remained in the country since 2016 after the expiration of his visathat is, more than nine years in an irregular situation.

Adongo, 37, starred in a unusual sports career. Coming from rugby, he was recruited by the Colts and was part of the franchise between 2013 and 2015becoming the first Kenyan footballer to play in the NFL, a historic milestone for the sport of his country.

However, once that professional stage is over, remained in US territory without immigration authorization corresponding, as explained by federal authorities.

ICE also detailed that the former player accumulated different criminal record for the last nine years in the state of Indianaincluding charges for serious intimidation, assault and disorderly conduct. According to authorities, the most recent charges against Adongo fell within the so-called Laken Riley Lawpromulgated by the president donald trump in January 2025. This regulation contemplates mandatory detention, without the possibility of bail, for certain immigrants in an irregular situation accused of certain crimes, within the framework of a general tightening of the country’s immigration policy.

The case is framed in a context of intensification of immigration control actions during Trump’s second term. ICE itself has presented Adongo’s deportation as an example of strict law enforcementregardless of the public notoriety of the affected person
