Veteran edge rusher joins Eagles to bolster defensive front after Week 1 victory
PHILADELPHIA – Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman wasted no time addressing his team’s pass rush needs following their opening week performance.
Just one day after Philadelphia’s 24-20 victory against the Dallas Cowboys, the organization brought in seasoned edge defender Za’Darius Smith to strengthen their defensive front.
The 32-year-old veteran brings considerable experience into his 11th NFL campaign. Smith recorded nine sacks during the 2024 season while playing for both Cleveland and Detroit. His new Philadelphia contract spans one year with a potential value of $8.25 million, according to Pro Football Talk reporting.
The deal structure includes a $4.25 million base salary complemented by performance-based earnings: $2.5 million in sack bonuses, a $500,000 Pro Bowl incentive, and an additional $1 million contingent on the Eagles reaching the Super Bowl again. Since Philadelphia waited until after the season opener to complete the signing, no portion of Smith’s compensation carries full guarantees.
Smith’s resume features three Pro Bowl selections and second-team All-Pro recognition in 2020. Throughout his career, he’s accumulated 69 sacks with three seasons reaching double digits – most recently achieving that milestone in 2022 while with Minnesota.
His arrival at the NovaCare Complex represents the most accomplished edge presence currently on Philadelphia’s roster.
Eagles’ Current Edge Situation Lacks Depth
During Thursday evening’s season opener against Dallas, Philadelphia deployed third-year defender Nolan Smith alongside rising sophomore Jalyx Hunt as starters. Josh Uche and practice squad call-up Patrick Johnson provided additional rotation.
Both Azeez Ojulari and Ogbo Okoronkwo remained inactive for the contest.
While the Eagles failed to register a sack against Dallas, Pro Football Focus credited them with 19 quarterback pressures. Smith, Hunt, and Uche each contributed four hurries in the victory.
Uche’s production proved particularly efficient across just 19 defensive snaps, while Hunt participated in 39 plays and Smith saw action on 52 of Philadelphia’s 61 defensive opportunities.
Pro Football Focus rankings placed Uche as the Eagles’ top-graded defensive performer, with Nolan Smith ranking seventh and Hunt ninth – though Hunt received below-average marks specifically in pass rush situations.
Philadelphia’s pursuit of pass rush reinforcements included reported interest in Green Bay’s Micah Parsons, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicating the Eagles “made a strong play” for the superstar defender.
However, a Dallas source disputed this characterization to Eagles On SI, suggesting the Cowboys never genuinely entertained trading Parsons within their division – particularly to the defending NFC champions.
Smith’s Role and Roster Implications
Assuming the veteran maintains his effectiveness, Za’Darius Smith should quickly establish himself as a key component in Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme.
The ideal scenario would position both Smiths – Nolan and Za’Darius – as Philadelphia’s primary edge rushing tandem, with Hunt and Uche providing valuable depth and situational support.
To accommodate Smith’s roster addition, Philadelphia placed fullback Ben VanSumeren on injured reserve following the significant leg injury he sustained during Thursday’s opening kickoff.
This strategic move addresses an immediate need while providing the Eagles with proven pass rush capabilities as they pursue another championship run.
