LAS VEGAS — Within the nine-plus yr historical past of the Vegas Golden Knights, they’ve by no means come again from a four-goal deficit to win, or register a degree.
They nonetheless have not. However not from an absence of attempting.
After recognizing Anaheim a 4-0 lead, the Knights had a livid third-period rally and practically got here up with the equalizer within the remaining seconds. However Lukas Dostal managed to maintain the puck out of his internet when it counted most and it enabled the Geese to hold on for a 4-3 win of their season opener.
“You by no means need to get down in that scenario,” Knights coach Ryan Craig stated. “I appreciated our response but it surely took us some time to reply.”
Anaheim’s 4 objectives got here in a 7:11 span, starting with eight seconds left within the first interval on Bennett Sennecke’s breakaway and ending 7:03 into the second interval when Leo Carlsson scored off a rebound after Carter Hart had denied Cutter Gauthier, then A.J. Greer. In between have been tallies from Alex Killorn and Jeff Mallot.
“Towards a group like that, with their high-end gamers, you give them time and house, they are going to make performs and so they did,” Knights captain Mark Stone stated. “We did not make it onerous sufficient for them.”
You could recall final yr the Knights discovered themselves chasing the sport extra typically than they would like. Craig stated that it is a new season and he is not going to fret {that a} development may proceed to present itself. Nonetheless, recognizing an opponent 4 objectives shouldn’t be a for mule for fulfillment.
“You all the time need to really feel assured that while you’re down in a recreation when you play your recreation you possibly can come again,” Stone stated. “If we play 60 minutes of our sort of hockey, irrespective of who scores the primary purpose, we nonetheless really feel assured. While you play these video games, 1-0 is ok, 2-0 its positive. You’re feeling you possibly can come again. However when it will get to a few, 4, it begins to be a tall job as you noticed tonight. You possibly can’t begin dishonest the sport. It’s important to discover higher methods to push again.”
Maybe the primary signal one thing was amiss for the Knights Friday was there was only one Zamboni accessible to wash the ice between durations as a substitute of the same old two. However that wasn’t the one clue.
Defensemen have been caught out of place. Pucks that usually land on teammates’ sticks have been winding up of their skates or lacking their mark completely.
“Our execution appeared just a little bit off,” Craig stated. “Pucks have been going by way of our sticks at occasions.”
The Knights and their crowd of 17,619 wanted a spark and so they bought it from Shea Theodore, who scored from the proper faceoff circle with 15:22 remaining to finish Dostal’s shutout bid. The Geese challenged for offsides however the name was confirmed and Anaheim was penalized for delay of recreation.
That led to Tomas Hertl beating Dostal in shut for an influence play purpose to chop it to 4-2 because the Knights scored twice in a 1:28 span. Braeden Bowman lower it to 4-3 with 2:50 remaining and with Hart pulled for an additional attacker, the Knights swarmed the Geese in their very own finish.
However Dostal got here by way of late, getting stops simply inches from the purpose line to maintain the puck out of his internet and provides Anaheim a win in its opener.
“You are by no means going to see this group stop. That is why we had playoff success and common season success as a group,” Stone stated. “We proceed to push. However while you get down in a gap 4-0, you are not going to return again fairly often.”
Craig stated: “I believed we had an excellent first interval. You by no means need to quit a purpose late in a interval. But it surely was the beginning of the second interval that did us in.”
Vegas now hits the highway for video games in Vancouver Sunday and Seattle Tuesday. They’ve already dropped a Pacific Division contest with Friday’s loss. The Canucks have scored 13 objectives of their two video games to date, second-most enjoyable the NHL.
“I believe it will be good for this group to get on the highway,” stated ahead Brett Howden.
