The Spanish player Jon Rahm He has placed eighth in the world golf rankings after his second place in the LIV Golf Andalucía tournament, a position in the ranking that he had not occupied for two years.
Rahm could not win his first victory on the emblematic Cadiz course, where the Englishman Tyrrell Hatton won, but he continues his climb among the best in the world, according to the ranking update published this Monday, which also highlights the entry for the first time by Eugenio López-Chacarra from Madrid in the ‘top 100’when placed in the position 87 after winning in the Netherlands.
At the beginning of February, when the Basque golfer started his third season at LIV, he was in 97th place and, four months later, he has entered the top ten, after being twelfth last week. The last time ‘the Lion of Barrika’ occupied eighth place was on June 9, 2024.
The fact that the Saudi league tournaments began to count towards the world ranking from the beginning of this campaign has been the decisive factor for Rahm to move into the top positions.
So far this year, the former world number one has accumulated two victories – Hong Kong and Mexico -, four second places and a fifth, which paves the way for him to win his third overall title in LIV.
In the ‘Majors’, he was also second in the PGA Championship and his worst performance was at the Augusta Masters, where he finished in 38th place.
Rahm will rest this week and will face the third major tournament, the United States Open, between the 18th and 21st of this month.
The other big news in the ranking is embodied by López-Chacarra, who for the first time enters the top hundred, going from 128 to 87 thanks to his victory in the KLM Netherlands Open, his second title in the DP World Tour, the European circuit, and fourth as a professional.
The 26-year-old player from Madrid also placed sixth in the Race to Dubai (Race to Dubai, in English), the DP World Tour classification, which encourages his chances of finishing among the top ten at the end of the season and getting a card for the PGA Tour, the American circuit.
The second Spaniard in the ranking continues to be the Catalan David Puig, tied for fifth in Valderrama, who goes from 60th to 56th place. Sergio García, fourth in the Cádiz tournament, advances in the classification and is now 164, behind Ángel Ayora (108), Josele Ballester (125), Nacho Elvira (140) and Jorge Campillo (163).
The world ranking continues to be led by the American Scottie Scheffler, with 16.07 points, ahead of the Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy (9.79) and the American Cameron Young (7.21), while Rahm has 5,001 points.
