Because of a pair of emphatic victories over the rival Pink Sox within the American League Wild Card Collection, the Yankees punched their ticket to their eight Division Collection up to now decade. The parameters of how you can get to the ALDS have advanced some since that streak started in 2017 (once they received a memorable one-game playoff in opposition to the Twins), however the Yankees have discovered their means there as a rule.
This would be the Yankees’ third consecutive ALDS journey. In 2024, that they had the first-round bye, and although there have been some nervous moments, they in the end dealt with the upstart Royals in 4 video games earlier than ultimately falling to the Dodgers within the World Collection. Final yr, they have been shunted to the Wild Card Collection and needed to win twice in opposition to Boston earlier than they may face the upstart Blue Jays, who narrowly beat them out for the AL East crown. That put them on the again foot, and many of the group did not play notably nicely in a four-game loss.

The story for 2026 is kind of much like the one for 2025, because the Yankees have been once more the preseason favorites for the AL East, just for the shocking Rays to usurp them for the division and power them to fend off the Pink Sox to outlive the Wild Card spherical. Effectively now we’re right here, and although the Yankees have to chop via that path to make it again to the Fall Basic, the chance is there for the taking.
That is simply the second time that the Yankees and Rays have ever squared off in October, with the one different time being an ALDS loss in 2020 that noticed all 5 video games performed at empty Petco Park in San Diego resulting from COVID restrictions. Since followers will truly be at these video games—together with the Yankees’ first official playoff journey to Tropicana Subject—this will likely be a way more consultant collection.
It appears probably that the deliberate Recreation 3 starters for the Wild Card Collection, Gerrit Cole, will get the ball within the ALDS opener on the Trop on Saturday in opposition to the Rays’ ace, righty Drew Rasmussen. The Yankees’ personal No. 1, Cam Schlittler, will have the ability to come again on regular relaxation for Recreation 2. Past that? Keep tuned. We’ll have extra on this ALDS battle within the coming days, however here is what we all know concerning the tune-in information as of late on September thirtieth.
