INDIANAPOLIS — l’s fourth-quarter a on Saturday afternoon served as a pivotal lesson for the m.
IU soccer, going through its first loss since 2024, rallied from an 11-point deficit with 12 minutes left within the sport to attain two touchdowns and win by three factors on the street. m that “good groups discover a option to win video games like this.”
That’s precisely the kind of mentality IU males’s basketball coach s needs to convey to his personal crew.
“Sarcastically, we used our soccer crew to speak about that a bit bit, and why have they been profitable?” DeVries stated following n over r. “We use that from final 12 months and this 12 months. Their means to consider in what they’re doing, keep disciplined within the particulars, not get emotional with ups and downs, these kinds of issues.”
Certain, it wasn’t almost as excessive of stakes as IU soccer’s 22-game win streak; it was an exhibition sport at Hinkle Fieldhouse, and Butler had minimize a’s result in simply three factors at halftime. However that mentality powered the s by means of a dominant second half.
However the mentality, whether or not it’s the primary exhibition sport of the 12 months or the nationwide championship, must be the identical. That’s how groups keep constant all year long.
“It was what issues have they achieved which have helped them win tight video games like that?” DeVries stated. “Successful’s successful. The method is similar in nearly each sport. It’s important to be very disciplined. It’s important to consider in that self-discipline, and it needs to be constant. And our guys, we’re getting there. We’re not there but, however we’re getting nearer.”

IU had 11 scholarship newcomers this 12 months as DeVries largely constructed his roster by means of the switch portal for the second straight season. The beginning 5 DeVries used — guards Darren Harris, Markus Burton, and Jaeden Mustaf together with ahead Samet Yigitoglu and Aiden Sherrell — all got here to the Hoosiers by means of the portal this offseason.
“Most of us are new to this system, so we simply must settle in,” Harris, who led the crew with 13 factors, stated. “… We’ve been working towards in opposition to one another for it appears like eternally now, so as soon as the reside ball begins going and we see stuff we haven’t seen earlier than, actions and stuff we’ll speak about, we’ll begin to settle in. We did a greater job within the second half.”
All the new Hoosiers, although, subscribed to the Indiana soccer mannequin: Good groups discover a option to win these video games.
Butler hung round for the primary half, staying inside single digits always and getting inside three factors at halftime, however Indiana stepped on the fuel within the second half. They pressured 9 turnovers, held the Bulldogs to 33.3% taking pictures from the sector (18% from 3-point vary) and allowed simply 27 factors within the second half in comparison with 41 factors within the first.
Harm report: s
As an entire, DeVries was particularly impressed along with his crew’s rebounding; when requested, he listed it because the Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 finest issues he noticed on the ground. Indiana collected 53 complete rebounds, properly distributed throughout gamers: Mustaf had eight, Sherrell had 9, and freshman Trevor Manhertz had eight off the bench.
“That’s been our complete focus the entire offseason,” DeVries stated. “Coming into the sport, we needed to be constructed for that. I assumed our guys did an awesome job of simply staying after, staying after, staying after. Even at halftime, solely having a three-point lead, we had doubled them up in rebounds. There’s loads of different stuff we are able to work on, however I assumed this, the entire focus coming into this sport that we prioritized the entire offseason, performed out precisely how we needed it to.”
The Hoosiers have two different exhibitions developing: they may play North Carolina at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Oct. 18, then Western Kentucky at Ford Heart in Evansville on Oct. 25. Indiana opens the season at Meeting Corridor in opposition to Japanese Illinois on Nov. 2.
