Elon Musk has more cash than simply about anybody on the planet. He is poured it into rockets, electrical vehicles, social media, and politics. One factor he hasn’t purchased is a sports activities crew. And in response to two individuals who know the way these offers truly get executed, there is a good cause for that.
Whereas Musk might need some huge cash, the unlucky reality for him is that cash alone is just not adequate to purchase a sports activities crew. He would additionally want approval from the opposite house owners within the league.

‘He would not do nicely in an proprietor’s room’
The subject got here up on the most recent episode of Pablo Torre Finds Out, that includes former Marlins president David Samson and former ESPN president John Skipper. Torre mentioned Skipper had raised the likelihood that Musk may at some point change into a sports activities proprietor. Samson did not assume Musk would cease at one crew.
“I do not assume he’d purchase a crew. I believe he would simply purchase each crew, simply purchase the league,” Samson mentioned. “He would not do nicely in an proprietor’s room. Frankly, I do not assume he’d get 23 votes to purchase a crew. But when he went in, you already know, at a pair hundred billion for the whole league, I believe folks would have to consider it.”
That 23-vote threshold is a reference to MLB, the place a brand new proprietor wants approval from 75 % of the league’s 30 house owners. The NFL and NBA have comparable three-quarters necessities.

Skipper, nevertheless, pitched a distinct strategy, given Musk’s huge wealth.
“Given the sum of money he has, he may do all types of punk methods with that,” Skipper mentioned. “‘I am providing $25 billion. Baseball groups line up, basketball groups line up, and inform me why I ought to spend that in your membership.’ It is the Elon Musk membership.”
Nonetheless, that does not precisely resolve the unique drawback of his lack of recognition.
“No, it would not work as a result of once more, he would not get the votes,” Samson mentioned. “I believe it is a totally different dialog, which is I am giving everyone 4x what anybody will give and I simply really feel like taking the league non-public, if you’ll, and proudly owning each crew. However there is a bunch of individuals in place to try this. It is not stunning to me that Bezos hasn’t purchased a crew but. Why would you be bothered? Take into consideration why Michael Rubin divested himself of the Sixers. It is method simpler to do enterprise not proudly owning a crew than it’s to do enterprise proudly owning a crew.”
