n’s battle to get on the sector is a product of the particular linebacker place the s see him in and his spot on the depth chart, defensive coordinator o instructed reporters Tuesday.
Allen, taken 53rd-overall in April’s draft, logged his second snapless sport of his quick NFL profession within the s’ 30-13 win in London. Maybe much more stunning, although, Anarumo rotated 4 linebackers all through the sport, with fourth-year journeyman Austin Ajiake seeing his first time on the place this season.
Colts basic supervisor Chris Ballard declared Allen a starter and the protection’s play-caller “from the get-go” after the draft. Now, Allen seems to be No. 5 on the depth chart among the many group’s six linebackers, forward of solely rookie undrafted free agent Tahj Chambers, who’s logged 93 particular groups snaps.

Anarumo, nonetheless, defined Tuesday that the maths is extra difficult than that. The Colts view Ajiake as a dime linebacker who would play totally on clear passing downs – and there have been a number of with the Colts main by two or extra scores for a lot of the fourth quarter. The group views Jaylon Carlies – who snagged the group’s first interception of the yr on Sunday – and rookie Bryce Boettcher as its choices at weak-side linebacker, and veteran Akeem Davis-Gaither is the starter at center linebacker.
Till one thing vital modifications in Davis-Gaither’s efficiency or Allen’s growth, it’s arduous to think about Allen taking part in vital snaps. After a Week 1 debacle with the Colts riddled with communication points whereas security Camryn Bynum relayed performs from Anarumo, coaches went with the normal plan of giving that function to Davis-Gaither.
“Akeem’s taking part in nicely proper now. We have been taking part in nicely (on Sunday),” Anarumo mentioned. “C.J.'s getting higher every week in follow, so he’ll get his alternatives. Once more, issues are going nicely. The play rely was low at one level, so there was no must relaxation Akeem, so we simply let it as-is. However (I’m) not down on C.J. He’s working his tail off. He’ll have his alternative.”
Allen appears to face an uphill battle to get on the sector sitting behind the one participant on the depth chart who can’t seamlessly cut up snaps with out risking communication points. Somewhat than having an opportunity to point out out in video games and power coaches to raise his workload, Allen’s going to have to point out out on the follow area in hopes of forcing coaches to make a lineup change.
Exterior the seven second-round picks from this spring's draft who've missed not less than two video games resulting from harm, solely six have performed fewer than 100 snaps. Allen's rely of 11 — six in Week 2 and 5 in Week 3, all on protection — rank because the second-fewest amongst wholesome second-rounders, trailing solely Rams tight finish Max Klare, who Los Angeles took with the 61st decide in April.
