ATLANTA — In an all-or-nothing, loser-exits-the-season playoff recreation, beginning a pitcher with all of 18 ⅓ innings pitched on the yr is unquestionably one technique. Bringing in your 200-strikeout ace, who threw 95 pitches simply two days in the past, to cowl the crucial closing outs of the sport can be a method. Luckily for the Atlanta Braves, neither of those unconventional methods blew up in supervisor Walt Weiss' face on Thursday, and in consequence, Atlanta is s.
In a little bit of full-circle concord, the Braves’ most skilled pitcher and one in all its least skilled got here collectively to carry the road y. Ray Kerr began the no-tomorrow recreation, and when you have no thought who that’s, e. Chris Sale completed the sport, and if you happen to don’t know his complete story, properly, you’ll be able to go to his plaque in Cooperstown in a couple of years.
“Hopefully Ray Kerr turned a little bit of a family title tonight,” Weiss mentioned after the sport. “He deserves it. He's obtained an incredible story.”
Kerr’s backstory went from d within the time it took him to throw 3 ⅓ scoreless innings in opposition to the Phillies, his longest — and, clearly, most crucial — outing of the yr. Now 32, he grew up in Reno, Nevada, one in all six youngsters, falling in love with fishing and bouncing out and in of foster care. He labored at a 7-Eleven and a movie show earlier than enrolling at Lassen Group School in California. He pitched properly sufficient there and within the Alaska Baseball League that the Mariners and Marlins confirmed curiosity, and the Mariners provided him a minor-league slot and a $2,000 signing bonus in 2017.
He topped out within the Seattle system at Triple-A, and the Mariners dealt him to San Diego, the place he noticed his first major-league motion in 2022. The Padres despatched him to Atlanta in December 2023, however Tommy John surgical procedure sidelined him for a lot of 2024 and all of 2025. After a stint taking part in for Atlanta’s Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, he returned to Atlanta’s roster in August, and right here we’re.
Weiss informed Kerr on Wednesday that he’d be beginning the crucial Recreation 3, although the sport’s precise begin time remained very a lot in query, due to MLB’s scheduling shenanigans.
“It was sort of hectic as a result of we didn't know if the sport was beginning at 2 or 8,” Kerr mentioned after the sport, drenched in celebratory champagne. “So I used to be like, ‘Am I going to mattress this time, or this time?’”
Kerr settled his thoughts one of the simplest ways he knew how: with a viewing of Druski’s horror comedy “Livestream from Hell.” On Thursday, with the remainder of the clubhouse staying free by speaking about their fantasy soccer groups, he stayed locked in, specializing in the fruits of a dream he’d carried for his whole life.

Kerr confronted the tooth of Philadelphia’s order proper from the beginning. Within the first inning, he surrendered solely a single to Kyle Schwarber whereas inducing outs from Trea Turner and Alec Bohm and placing out the mighty and dreaded Bryce Harper. Given a three-run cushion within the backside of the primary, he cruised from there, dealing with the minimal till the highest of the fourth, when a stroll to Schwarber and a forceout of Harper introduced Weiss to the mound to wrap up Kerr’s evening.
“He wasn't rattled in any respect,” Weiss mentioned. “Regarded like a 10-year vet making a begin, and he was phenomenal.”
Nonetheless, that is Atlanta, land of 28-3, house of the one-World-Sequence-in-the-’90s Braves, the place no person’s too comfy till a superb 5 – 6 months after profitable a trophy. So sure, the Braves posted a 3-0 lead within the backside of the primary on Michael Harris II’s three-run shot, and sure, Atlanta added two extra runs within the fourth off Ozzie Albies’ bat, and sure, Matt Olson added a sixth within the seventh. However when Philadelphia’s Derek Hill tripled to start out the eighth, and Turner sacrificed him house, and Schwarber and Harper lurked, properly, it didn’t matter that the Phillies’ win chance was a mere 2.3%. A murmur ran via the Truist Park crowd. If it might occur to anybody …
So Sale got here on to complete the eighth and pitch the ninth. However to get there, we’ve to take a detour via Weiss’ workplace.
Weiss arrived on the ballpark on Thursday to search out Sale sitting in his workplace, grinning.
“I really feel superb,” Sale mentioned, although he’d thrown 6 ⅓ innings of playoff ball simply two days prior.
“Effectively,” Weiss replied, “let’s discuss.”
Weiss had already determined to not ask Sale if he needed to pitch, since he knew Sale would say sure, even when his arm have been hanging on by a thread. However when Sale made the provide, Weiss fortunately took him up on it. They mapped out a plan to have Sale face the depraved high of Philadelphia’s order late within the recreation, and that’s precisely the way it performed out, with Sale blowing away Harper within the backside of the eighth and placing out two extra to shut out the ninth.
“I've run out of superlatives for Chris Sale,” Weiss mentioned. “Whenever you take every little thing into consideration — teammate, competitor, performer, work ethic, all these issues — he's pretty much as good as I've ever been round.”
Coming from a man who has performed baseball alongside and in opposition to the most effective of the previous 4 a long time, that’s some excessive reward.
It’s unimaginable to overstate the psychological raise this collection win may have on each Braves gamers and Braves followers. This can be a workforce that has performed constantly sturdy, typically wonderful baseball for greater than 35 years, with solely two World Sequence rings to indicate for it. That’s the identical because the Marlins and Blue Jays, only one greater than the Royals, Nationals and Angels.
Over the previous 27 seasons courting to 2000, the Braves have reached the playoffs 16 occasions. However in that whole stretch, they’ve received their preliminary collection simply 4 occasions, together with this yr. And so they’ve received a number of playoff collection in a single postseason simply twice, in 2020 and in 2021, their world championship yr.
Now, although, the win-loss report resets to 0-0. The Braves journey to Los Angeles to tackle the Dodgers, a workforce Atlanta beat 5 out of six occasions within the common season. There’s nonetheless October baseball forward for these Braves, as surprising as which may’ve appeared firstly of this yr.
“No person had us making the playoffs,” Weiss mentioned. “These guys have overcome a lot. Then in addition, on the finish of the yr, we lose three extra starters. We barely have sufficient starters to play a collection, but it's guys like Ray Kerr and all people else that step up and carry out when the stakes are highest. It’s such an awesome group.”
The Braves s on Saturday in Los Angeles and can return to Atlanta for no less than one recreation beginning Tuesday. Who will pitch? Who’s to say? The Braves in all probability received’t need to try the identical kind of all-hands-on-deck technique they employed in Recreation 3, however they now know for certain that it’s an possibility.
And that’s sufficient for now.
