The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, accused the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) of “alter the score of the World Cup venues” to “remove Vigo” in reference to the 2030 World Cup which will be organized by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Caballero was the protagonist of an informative breakfast organized by Nueva Economía Fórum, in which he was presented by the Minister of Education and Sports, Milagros Tolón, and in which the president of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes, was also present.
In the opinion of the councilor of Vigo, “the RFEF altered the score of the World Cup venues to remove Vigo, which was among the eleven selected cities and, in this way, it was no longer a World Cup host,” recalling the controversy over the inclusion of cities that will host matches in the World Cup event.
“It is not legitimate to alter scores so that a city is left out; At this time the Federation had to rectify and sent the name of Vigo and Valencia as a proposal to host the World Cup.“added Caballero.
Despite everything, the mayor of the Galician city was optimistic about the next World Cup and assured that Vigo will have a presence in it: “The probability of hosting the World Cup is 100% because they are not going to be able to eliminate us and because we have an extraordinary project.”
“I believe that despite what happened, we are going to host the World Cup.”
He also praised the stadium Abanca Balaídos, home of the Real Club Celta de Vigo, which he classified as “the Guggenheim of Vigo“, although he acknowledged needing “a larger stadium” to improve the brand image and accused the Provincial Council and Xunta de Galicia of not wanting to “pay their fair share.”
The 2030 World Cup will be organized by Spain, Morocco and Portugal. In addition, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host the opening match of their respective teams in tribute to the centenary of the World Cup held in Montevideo in 1930, the first in FIFA history.
