Life has been fairly good currently for s defensive deal with Gracen Halton.
The fourth-round rookie, who climbed San Francisco's depth chart to begin the season amid a slew of accidents, stuffed in admirably for incumbent starters Alfred Collins and CJ West. He earned extra taking part in time and met the second in a Week 5 win over the Seattle Seahawks, etching his identify into rivalry lore with a pressured fumble and a restoration for a landing in a three-point win.
Throughout his first-ever NFL bye week, the nice occasions continued to roll. Halton attended a team-wide Halloween get together. Then he took a visit to his hometown San Diego earlier than flying again to the Bay Space on Sunday. "Acquired down on the water and loved my time," Halton advised reporters Monday in Santa Clara.
So, naturally, life needed to take the 22-year-old down a peg. When the 49ers acquired defensive deal with DeForest Buckner in a commerce with the Indianapolis Colts final week, Halton's beginning position, which he had labored so arduous to earn over the course of six months, vanished with the snap of a finger. Transfer over, rookie, and make approach for a three-time Professional Bowler who additionally occurs to be a fan favourite and one of the recognizable figures of the n period.
Upon studying that he was being supplanted, Halton absolutely felt dissatisfied. A slight little bit of, what extra might I’ve finished? However the prevailing feeling, he mentioned Monday contained in the 49ers' locker room, was pleasure.
"I'm a younger man, so I've been watching (him) for a very long time," Halton mentioned with a smile. "I didn't notice how large he’s in individual. I used to be like, ‘This can be a large dude!'
"We're simply glad that we received anyone that might assist us. One other vet that's been right here earlier than. That is aware of what the tradition is like. That is aware of what the usual is."
With out understanding it, Buckner served as an early soccer position mannequin for Halton. Within the offseason main as much as his freshman season at Oklahoma, Halton mentioned he watched Buckner, Dexter Lawrence II and a handful of different NFL defensive tackles work out on the Sooners' facility with non-public coach Mark Corridor. Halton remembered trying on with large eyes and open ears, imagining the potential of sooner or later being Buckner's NFL peer.
4 years later, they're teammates.
"I used to be only a freshman watching these guys coaching at our facility," Halton mentioned. "Now we on the identical group within the league. It's loopy."
Buckner is a pure chief. He was one in 2019, at age 25, and he actually needs to be that once more at 32. On his first morning again on the facility, whereas getting in a Monday morning carry, Buckner bumped into Halton. They embraced, however few phrases wanted to be mentioned. "He remembered me, I remembered him," Halton mentioned. "I'm similar to, ‘Man, full circle.'
"Watching how he does issues, I choose it up rapidly. So I'm gonna be in his head on daily basis, simply asking for suggestions."
Buckner needs to be an "open guide" for rookies like Halton and Romello Peak, and for second-year gamers like s and Sebastian Valdez, who’ve been searching for a big presence, figuratively and actually, to indicate them the way in which. Buckner will be that at 6-foot-7, 295 kilos, and as a participant who has seen all of it.
"There's a variety of younger guys within the room," Buckner mentioned Monday. "So in the event that they wish to choose my mind, ask me questions, I'm at all times an open guide to all of them. It doesn't take only one or two guys to make a run. It's your entire room. I at all times really imagine the D-line is the engine of the group. … I wish to pour into these younger guys every little thing that I do know, so I will help them elevate their recreation and get even higher."
Earlier than he was ever traded again to the 49ers, Buckner's influence loomed in San Francisco's line of defense conferences. A few of Buckner's new teammates advised him that line of defense coach Kris Kocurek would usually present them movie of himself – and the remainder of that vaunted 2019 line of defense that reached a Tremendous Bowl – as a mannequin of how issues needs to be finished.
"With Kris, he has a excessive customary of D-line play," Buckner mentioned. "He has two groups that's a very excessive customary for him: The 2010 Detroit (Lions) line, and the 2019 Niner line. So to be talked about like that over the previous six years – or nonetheless a few years it's been – it was sort of good to listen to.
"They (knew) about me from afar," Buckner continued, "however I'm right here now. And I simply needed to be within the room, to be sure that I'm doing all I can to assist elevate the room."
